Who is Lucas Black?
American actor Lucas York Black was born in Decatur, Alabama USA, on 29 November 1982, making Sagittarius his zodiac sign. He’s had roles in 28 TV series and movies, but is perhaps still known best for playing Frank Wheatley in the 1996 drama movie “Sling Blade”, which Billy Bob Thornton wrote and directed, as well as starred in alongside Dwight Yoakam and J. T. Walsh. It follows now adult Karl Childers who’s been hospitalized since his mother and her lover were murdered when he was still a child, while he’s now been released; the movie won 15 of its 30 award nominations, including an Oscar win for Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published.
Early life and education
Lucas was raised in Speake, Alabama, alongside his two older siblings Lee and Lori, by their father Larry Black who worked at a museum, and mother Jan Gillespie who was an office worker; because Lucas respects his family’s privacy, not a lot else has been disclosed about them.
He was around eight years old when he fell in love with acting, and started appearing in plays performed at his elementary school; Lucas was 11 when he made his debut film appearance, playing Ebb in the critically acclaimed 1994 drama “The War”, directed by Jon Avnet, and which starred Elijah Wood, Kevin Costner and Mare Winningham. It follows a Vietnam veteran as he’s raising his sons, and the movie won one of its four award nominations.
Lucas then focused on his career in the film industry, but also continued his studies; he attended a local high school in Speake, where he played for the school’s football team Speake Bobcats; upon matriculating in 2001, he chose not to pursue a college degree.

Lucas played Burt DeLaughter in the 1996 historical drama “Ghosts of Mississippi”, directed by Rob Reiner, and which starred Alec Baldwin, James Woods and Whoopi Goldberg. It follows district attorney Medgar Evers who’s trying to bring a white racist to justice, after he killed a civil rights leader in 1963; the movie won two of its 13 award nominations, including two Oscar nominations for Best Make-up and Best Actor in a Supporting Role (James Woods).
A couple of Lucas’ following roles were in the 1998 science fiction mystery “The X Files”, and in 1999 the animated family drama “Our Friend, Martin” (voice role) and the crime comedy “Crazy in Alabama”.
In 2000, he portrayed Jimmy Blevins in the hit romantic western “All the Pretty Horses”, which Billy Bob Thornton directed, and which starred Henry Thomas, Penelope Cruz and Matt Damon. It follows the lives of two Texas cowboys, and the film won two of its 16 award nominations. Lucas played Oakley in the 2003 romantic adventure “Cold Mountain”, and the following year saw him appear in both the musical drama “Killer Diller” and the sports action “Friday Night Lights”. In 2006, he played the main character Sean Boswell in the critically acclaimed action crime thriller “The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift”, directed by Justin Lin, and which also starred Zachery Ty Bryan and Shad moss. It follows a teenager who’s moved with his father to Tokyo, Japan and has become a drift racer; the film won one of its five award nominations.
Some of Lucas’ following notable performances were in the 2009 mystery “Get Low”, the 2010 drama “Tough Trade”, and the 2012 drama “Promised Land”.
He’s since appeared in three more movies: the 2015 action crime thriller “Furious 7”, the 2021 action crime thriller “F9: The Fast Saga”, and the 2022 adventure “Legacy Peak”; Lucas is currently shooting for the upcoming movie “Unsung Hero”.
Roles in TV series
Lucas’ debut TV series role was playing the lead character Caleb Temple in all 22 episodes of the horror thriller “American Gothic”, created by Shaun Cassidy, and which also starred Gary Cole and Paige Turco. It follows the life of an evil sheriff with demonic powers, who’s only afraid of the boy whom he fathered through rape; the series aired from 1995 through 1998 and was nominated for six awards.
Between 1997 and 2000, Lucas appeared in two episodes of the adventure comedy “The Wonderful World of Disney”, and his following role came in 2014 through 2019 when cast to play Christopher LaSalle in 125 episodes of the popular crime action “NCIS: New Orleans”, which Gary Slasberg created, and which starred CCH Pounder, Rob Kerkovich and Scott Bakula. It follows the detective team NCIS, which investigates military-related crimes in the city of Big Easy – the series aired from 2014 through 2021, and won two of its eight award nominations.
Lucas has appeared in only one other TV series: while still shooting for “NCIS: New Orleans”, he reprised his role as Christopher LaSalle in four episodes of the crime action “NCIS”.

She gave birth to their daughter Sophie Jo in June 2011, and their son, whose name hasn’t been revealed followed in August 2013; Lucas and Maggie have another child, by his/her birthdate and gender haven’t been disclosed.
Lucas is yet to mention the women whom he had dated before he met Maggie; as of April 2023, he’s married to Maggie O’Brien, and they have three children together.

Lucas is physically highly active, as he often plays various sports with his friends, while his favorites are golf, basketball and football.
He was offered a role in the critically acclaimed 1998 romantic western movie “The Horse Whisperer”, which was nominated for an Oscar for Best Music, Original Song; Lucas turned the offer down because the producers had asked him to change his accent.
He hasn’t attended any acting school.
