Growing up in a football-loving family, he was exposed to the sport from a young age, as his father, Jim Venables, was a successful high school football coach, which greatly influenced Brent’s passion for the game. Venables attended Salina High School, and during his high school years, demonstrated his athletic abilities by playing as a linebacker and tight end on the football team. His dedication, hard work, and talent on the field became evident as he made notable contributions to the team’s success.

After matriculation, Venables continued his academic and athletic journey at Kansas State University. As a student-athlete, he joined the Wildcats’ football program, playing as a linebacker from 1990 to 1992. In addition, Venables focused on his education, and earned his bachelor’s degree in education.

Career Beginnings

After completing his education, Brent Venables embarked on his coaching career, starting as a graduate assistant at Kansas State University. He held this position from 1993 until 1996, then being promoted to linebackers coach. He remained in the position for two years before he joined the University of Oklahoma as co-defensive co-ordinator and linebackers coach. The head coach at the time was Bob Stoops, with whom he worked at Kansas State.

Initially sharing defensive oversight with Mike Stoops, Bob’s younger brother, Venables took on the sole responsibility as defensive coordinator when Mike became head coach at Arizona in 2004. In recognition of his coaching abilities, Venables was a finalist for the prestigious Broyles Award in 2006, which recognizes the nation’s top assistant coach. He remained at Oklahoma until 2011, serving as Assistant Head Coach, Defensive Coordinator, and Linebackers Coach until the end of his tenure.

His salary was later revealed, and according to reports, he was earning $1.7 million a year at Clemson, the second-highest-paid coach in this category, behind Dave Aranda, who served as Louisiana State University (LSU) defense co-ordinator.

Venables’ relentless dedication and hard work ultimately led him to achieve his goal of becoming a head coach. On 5 December 2021, he was appointed the 23rd head coach at the University of Oklahoma, taking over the position vacated by Lincoln Riley, who accepted the head-coaching position at the University of Southern California (USC).

In the one season he managed the Oklahoma Sooners, Brent had a record of six wins and seven losses. They made it to the college football bowl where they faced Florida State Seminoles, but lost the match 35-32.
