Alexandra Shipp is an American actress, known best for portraying such iconic characters as Aaliyah in the film “Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B” (2014), and Storm in the X-Men film franchise, in addition to other notable portrayals.

lexandra Shipp was born on 16 July 1991, in Phoenix, Arizona, USA. Her mother is a Kundalini yoga teacher, and her father is a musician and music producer. Of mixed ancestry, she has two brothers, Jordan and James, and stepsister Kasia.
Shipp attended Arizona School for the Arts and St. Mary’s Catholic High School Phoenix, then moved to Los Angeles when she was just 17 to pursue an acting career.
Career Beginnings
Alexandra made her acting debut in 2009, playing the small role of Valentina in the film “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel”, which was a box-office success and helped to launch her acting career.
Shipp went on to appear in various TV shows, including “Switched at Birth” as Ashley, a friend of one of the main characters, in the Season 1 episode entitled “Dance Amongst Daggers”. In 2012, Shipp guest-starred in an episode of the Nickelodeon series “Victorious”, playing the role of Aleese in the episode entitled “The Gorilla Club”.
Then in 2013, Shipp landed a recurring role in the Nickelodeon mystery series “House of Anubis”, as the character KT Rush, a new student at an English boarding school who becomes involved in solving the mystery surrounding the school’s ancient Egyptian curse. In 2014, Alexandra Shipp appeared in several TV projects. She had the small role playing Mary Beth in three episodes of the daytime soap opera “Days of Our Lives”, then portrayed the legendary singer Aaliyah Haughton in the Lifetime television movie “Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B”, which chronicled the life and career of Aaliyah, but was met with negative reviews and controversy. Nevertheless, her portrayal drew attention, and she soon had new prominent roles.
In 2015, she appeared in the biographical drama film “Straight Outta Compton” directed by F. Gary Gray, playing the role of Kimberly Woodruff, the wife of rapper and N.W.A. member Ice Cube. The film tells the story of the rise and fall of the iconic hip-hop group and their impact on the music industry, and society as a whole. The movie was a commercial and critical success, grossing over $200 million worldwide, and receiving widespread praise for its performances, direction, and screenplay.
Then in 2016, she secured another popular role, this time as Ororo Munroe, also known as Storm, in the superhero film “X-Men: Apocalypse”. In the film, Shipp played a younger version of the character, who is depicted as a teenager growing up in Cairo, Egypt. She eventually joins the team of mutant heroes led by Professor Charles Xavier, played by James McAvoy, to battle the powerful mutant Apocalypse portrayed by Oscar Isaac. Despite receiving mixed reviews, “X-Men: Apocalypse” was a commercial success, grossing over $543 million worldwide.
She would go on to reprise the role in the 2019 film “Dark Phoenix” which served as a conclusion to the main X-Men film series.
In the 2017 horror-comedy film “Tragedy Girls” Alexandra played the role of McKayla Hooper, one of two high school friends obsessed with becoming famous on social media by any means necessary, including committing murder. The film is a satire of the social media age, and the celebrity-obsessed culture surrounding it. It also features Brianna Hildebrand as McKayla’s best friend Sadie Cunningham, and Josh Hutcherson.

She continued her career quite successfully, and in 2018, appeared in the thriller film “Spinning Man” as Anna, a student who is romantically involved with a college professor, played by Pierce Brosnan. The film follows the investigation of a missing woman, and the suspicion that falls on the professor.
Shipp next appeared in the romantic comedy-drama film “Love, Simon” the same year, playing the role of Abby Suso, a close friend of the titular character Simon, played by Nick Robinson. The film tells the story of Simon’s journey of self-discovery as a gay teenager, and his search for love and acceptance among his friends and family.
The following year, Shipp played the role of Sasha Arias in the action-comedy film “Shaft”, the ex-girlfriend of the main character John Shaft Jr., played by Jessie T. Usher. The film is a prequel to the previous “Shaft” films, and follows the younger Shaft as he teams up with his father, played by Samuel L. Jackson, to solve a case involving a powerful drug lord.
