Who is Oona Chaplin?
Swiss-Spanish actress Oona Castilla Chaplin was born in Madrid, Spain on 4 June 1986, making Gemini her zodiac sign. She’s had roles in more than 40 TV series and movies, and is perhaps known best for playing Young Ruth in the 2015 romantic comedy movie “The Longest Ride”, directed by George Tillman Jr, and which starred Scott Eastwood, Britt Robertson and Alan Alda. It follows a young couple who’ve met an elderly man, while he’s now reflecting on his past love; the movie won one of its six award nominations.
Oona’s still today highly active in the film industry, and will be portraying Varang in three upcoming “Avatar” movies.
Education and early life
Oona was raised in Madrid alongside her maternal half-brother Shane, by her father Patricio Castilla who’s a Chilean cinematographer, and their mother Geraldine Chaplin who’s a British-American actress.
Oona lived in several countries while growing up, including Spain, Cuba, Switzerland and the UK, mostly because of her mother’s acting career. She was mostly into dancing during her teenage years, and took flamenco, salsa and ballet lessons.
She was 15 when she enrolled at Gordonstoun School in Scotland, after having been awarded a drama scholarship; Oona appeared in a number of school plays, and then toured the UK with the cast of an adaptation of “Romeo and Juliet”. She enrolled at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London, England in 2004, and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in 2007.
Roles in TV series
Oona’s debut TV series role was playing Kate in the 2007 episode “The Virus: Part 2” of the crime action “MI-5”, and the following year saw her play the same character in an episode of the action “Spooks: Code 9”.
In 2010, Oona portrayed Fabiana in the drama “Married Single Other”, created by Peter Souter, and which starred Shaun Dooley, Dean Lennox Kelly and Lucy Davis. It follows the lives of several British people of different ages, and the series was nominated for a TV Quick Award for Best New Drama. Also in 2010, Oona played Silvia in both episodes of the comedy mini-series “El Gordo: Una Historia Verdadera”.
In 2011 and 2012, she portrayed Marnie Madden in all the 12 episodes of the drama “The Hour”, created by Abi Morgan, and which starred Romola Garai, Ben Whishaw and Dominic West. It follows a journalist working in Cold War-era England, and the series won four of its 48 award nominations.

Oona’s also known for playing Talisa Maegyr in 11 episodes of the action adventure “Game of Thrones” (2012-2013), which ranks #13 best series of all time on the website IMDb; it aired from 2011 through 2019, and won 389 of more than 1,000 awards for which it was nominated.
Some of Oona’s most recent TV series roles have been in both episodes of the 2020 drama mini-series “The Comey Rule”, the 2022 episode “Alice? Are You Listening?” of the science fiction comedy “Made for Love”, and five episodes of the 2022 action thriller mini-series “Treason”.

Oona’s debut film role was playing Laura Chappel in the 2008 comedy “Inconceivable”, written and directed by Mary McGuckian, and which starred Lothaire Bluteau, David Alpay and David Sutcliffe. The movie covers the test-tube baby industry, and it won a 2010 TheWIFTS Foundation International Visionary Barbara Tipple Award for Best Actress (Jennifer Tilly). Some of Oona’s following roles were in 2008 in the short drama “First, Love?” and the action adventure mystery “Quantum of Solace”, and the 2009 horror mystery thriller “Imago Mortis”.
The year 2011 saw her play Beauty in the biographical thriller “The Devil’s Double”, directed by Lee Tamahori, and which starred Dominic Cooper, Ludivine Sagnier and Raad Rawi. It follows the life of Saddam Hussein’s double, and the film was nominated for four awards. Oona could then have been seen appearing in the thriller “The Sorrows”, the romantic comedy “What If” and the comedy “Powder Room”, all released in 2013.
She played the lead character Naomi in the 2016 science fiction “Realive”, written and directed by Mateo Gil, and which also starred Tom Hughes and Charlotte Le Bon. It follows Marc who’s been awaken after having been cryogenically frozen for 68 years, and the movie won three of its five award nominations.
Some of Oona’s most recent movie roles have been in the 2018 biographical drama “My Dinner with Herve”, and the short drama “Guardians of Life” and the horror “Lullaby” both in 2022.

We still know about one man whom she’s been with: sometime around the mid-2010s, Oona was in a relationship with Alex Lanipekun, a British actor, screenwriter and director who’s appeared in 45 movies and TV series, and is perhaps known best for playing Daniel Sands in all the eight episodes of the 2022 crime thriller “The Rising”.
Oona seems to be unattached as of May 2023, hasn’t married and doesn’t have children.
