Who is Sophia Anne Caruso?

American actress and singer Sophia Anne Caruso was born in Spokane, Washington State USA, on 11 July 2001, making Cancer her zodiac sign. She’s appeared in 13 TV series and movies, and is probably best known for playing Sophie, one of the lead characters in the 2022 action comedy movie “The School for Good and Evil”, written and directed by Paul Feig, and which also starred Kit Young and Cate Blanchett. It follows best friends Agatha and Sophie who’ve been sent to a school of magic, and the movie won a 2023 ReFrame Stamp for Feature.

Sophia’s also known for having portrayed Girl in David Bowie’s musical “Lazarus”, which premiered at the New York Theatre Workshop in 2016; she’s a huge fan of the British singer-songwriter, and has stated that it was a privilege to meet him, and work alongside him on the musical.

Early life and education

Sophia was raised in Spokane alongside her two older siblings, by their mother Deena Caruso who’s the owner of several jewelry and clothing stores, and father Steve Caruso who’s a former professional golfer.

Sophia became interested in acting at a very early age, and was seven when she joined the Spokane Children’s Theatre; she was also seven when she made her debut film appearance, playing Member of Sam’s School Band in the hit 2008 action mystery thriller “Eagle Eye”. D. J. Caruso directed the movie, which starred Rosario Dawson, Michelle Monaghan and Shia LaBeouf, and follows a man and a woman who’ve both received a call from a mysterious woman, who’s now threatening to kill their loved ones if they don’t do what she asks; the movie won three of its 11 award nominations.

Sophia eventually moved to Los Angeles, California to work on her career; because she hasn’t spoken of her education, it’s believed that she was home-schooled.

Roles in movies

Sophia played Girl on Street in the 2011 action science fiction adventure “I Am Number Four”, which D. J. Caruso directed, and which starred Alex Pettyfer, Timothy Olyphant and Dianna Agron. It follows an alien who’s hiding on Earth with his guardian, while a group of intergalactic bounty hunters are trying to kill him; the film won one of its two award nominations.

The year 2015 saw Sophia play Coke in the family drama “Jack of the Red Hearts”, directed by Janet Grillo, and which starred AnnaSophia Robb, Famke Janssen and Scott Cohen. It follows a teenage con artist who’s tricked a woman into hiring her to take care of her autistic daughter, and the film won two of its three award nominations.

Sophia’s also known for playing Lisa in the 2016 drama “37”, written and directed by Puk Grasten, and which starred Samira Wiley, Michael Potts and Maria Dizzia. It tells the story of when Kitty Genovese was killed in 1964, while close to 40 neighbors saw the murder and did nothing.

Sophia’s since appeared in only two movies: the 2017 drama “Crash & Burn”, and the above mentioned “The School for Good and Evil”.

Roles in TV series

Sophia made her debut TV series appearance in the 2013 episode “The Phenomenon” of the musical “Smash”, created by Theresa Rebeck, and which starred Debra Messing, Jack Davenport and Katharine McPhee. It follows a group of theatre actors as they’re preparing to star in a play about the late American actress, model and singer Marilyn Monroe, and the series won 10 of its 38 award nominations.

Also in 2013, Sophia played Young Jillian in the episode “Jillian Barberie/Dan Cortese/Bruce Boxleitner” of the documentary “Celebrity Ghost Stories”.

In 2017, she portrayed Lily in the popular romantic comedy “Strangers”, created by Mia Lidofsky, and which starred Zoe Chao, X Mayo and Stephanie DiMaggio. It follows Isobel who’s struggling to pay rent, and has thus ‘turned her extra bedroom into cash’; the series was nominated for a Webby Award for Video – Best Individual Performance.

Sophia’s only other TV series role has been playing Emma in the 2019 episode “7 Swans a Singin’” of the crime horror “Evil”, which Robert King and Michelle King created, and which stars Aasif Mandvi, Mike Colter and Katja Herbers. It follows a blue collar contractor, a priest in-training and a clinical psychologist as they’re investigating supernatural events, the series has been airing since 2019 and has won one of its 42 award nominations.

Roles in theatre

In 2014, Sophia played Tina Denmark in the play “Ruthless!” performed at the Triad Theatre, and the following month saw her travel to Washington, D. C. to play Charlotte van Gotheem in the play “Little Dancer” at the Kennedy Center.

She played a supporting character in the 2015 production of “The Nether” at the MCC Theatre, and was for her performance nominated for a Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Play. Some of her following roles were in the Broadway play “Blackbird”, performed at the Belasco Theatre, the play “Runaways” at New York City Centre and the play “Beetlejuice” at the National Theatre.

Other credits

Sophia sang the songs “Do-Re-Mi”, “Reprise” and “The Lonely Goatherd” in the 2013 TV special “The Sound of Music Live!”

Sophia’s amongst the most secretive of actresses, as she’s yet to mention any people whom she’s perhaps been with.

There are today a number of rumors circulating the internet concerning Sophia’s sexual orientation and current relationship status; some of her fans believe that she’s perhaps lesbian, and that this is why Sophia avoids speaking about her love life, but she’s yet to address this.

There’s also a fan who believes that he’s recently seen Sophia spending time with her boyfriend in public, but no evidence has been provided to support these claims either.

She seems to be unattached as of April 2023, hasn’t married and doesn’t have children.

Sophia’s quite popular on Instagram, as her account today numbers more than 250,000 followers, although she’s posted only 74 pictures and videos, with most of these featuring her during her everyday life.

She’s passionate about music, and can play both the guitar and the piano, while she’s also a talented singer.

Sophia likes to travel, and has been to a number of European countries and US states thanks to her acting career; her dream travel destination’s Athens, Greece.

She’s a huge fan of animated movies, with “How to Train Your Dragon” and “Megamind” being her two favorites. Sophia’s favorite actress is Anne Hathaway, and some of her favorite live-action films include “Song One”, “One Day” and “The Last Thing He Wanted”.
