Early life, family, and education
Born Stephan Joseph Kornacki under the zodiac sign of Leo on 22 August 1979, makes him 43 years old as of May 2023. He hails from Groton, Massachusetts USA, holds American nationality, and comes from a family of Polish descent. Raised by his parents, Anne Bernadette (nee Ramonas) and Stephen Joseph Senior, alongside his elder sister, Kathryn, he hasn’t shared the occupations of his parents but it’s known that his sister is a professor at Caldwell University, in New Jersey.
As a child, Steve was shy, and although he loved acting, he was reticent about performing in public, so to encourage him, his parents organized acting nights at their home. Steve was into sports and dreamed of becoming a sportscaster, like his idol Brent Musburger. In his spare time, he would read books, then aged 12, he found his new passion – politics.
When it comes to his educational background, upon matriculating from Groton-Dunstable Regional High School in 1997, Steve enrolled at Boston University, from which he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Arts (Film and Television), in 2001.
Becoming a media sensation
Steve became more interested in politics after graduating, and so moved to New Jersey, where he began serving as a reporter for PoliticsNJ.com, a political news site. Steve worked there from 2002 through 2006, before he started co-hosting a political news series on News 12 New Jersey television station.
Concurrently, he began writing political articles which were published in daily newspapers such as The Boston Globe, The Wall Street Journal, New York Observer, and The New York Times, among many others. Steve also served as a politics editor at Salon, a politically progressive/liberal news website.

Steve’s profile as a political reporter grew, and he was invited to co-host the ensemble and political talk show “The Cycle” with Krystal Ball, a political strategist, S. E. Cupp, a conservative columnist, and Toure Neblett, a pop-culture commentator.
Steve accepted, and from 2012 through 2013, he served in this position for Microsoft and the National Broadcasting Company (MSNBC), subsequently taking over another news television program, entitled “Up” – Steve’s first episode aired on 13 April 2013.
In the following year, he served as an election coverage map correspondent. In 2016, Steve hosted a daily program from 4 to 5 pm, and was frequently seen as the guest host on programs such as “All In with Chris Hayes”, “Hardball with Chris Matthews”, and “The Rachel Maddow Show”.
In May 2017, Steve began serving as the national political correspondent for NBC News Group. In 2018, Steve published his debut book, “The Red and the Blue: The 1990s and the Birth of Political Tribalism”, which was a descriptive analysis of the politics during the ‘90s.
In 2019, Steve began hosting the podcast entitled “Article II: Inside Impeachment”, which aired 54 episodes until 2021.
Concurrently, he worked on the 2020 US presidential election, and gained fame for providing frenetic analysis on voting day, standing in front of the ‘big board’, and wearing khaki pants which are now his trademark. People magazine named him ‘one of the sexiest men alive’, while khaki pants became a fashion trend, referred to as ‘Kornacki Khakis’.
Steve (and his khakis) became an internet sensation, and social media platforms were full of comments about this guy who slowly but surely became a household favorite to watch during the intense days after Election Day. Steve began his shift in the early mornings, and stepped away from the map boards after almost 24 hours. His devotion to delivering results in real-time was supported by the public – as Steve said, his Twitter DM was full of kind and friendly messages.
His fellows from NBC News Group joked that they had to remove him forcibly from the building, and put him in a room with blankets, pillow, and warm milk. In 2021, Steve was nominated for The Queerties Award – Badass.
As mentioned, Steve is now serving as NBC News Group’s national political correspondent, but is also known for his unique analytic style when it comes to sports coverage.
Love life and relationships
Steve was the subject of various rumors about his love life and his sexual orientation, and in 2011 he publicly came out as gay. In his column, he wrote about his first sexual experience with another man, saying that he felt dirty, embarrassed, and degraded – he was raised in the Catholic faith.
Steve also wrote about a man named Dan, with whom he planned to have a more serious relationship, and eventually the two began dating, however, they broke up after a few months.
In the following years, Steve kept his romantic life secret, but when he gained fame during the 2020 US presidential election, people began commenting about his alleged marriage with David Mack, an editor at BuzzFeed. The reason for this was David’s tweet which said ‘when will my husband, steve kornacki, return from war’. However, the truth is that David was joking, and it’s widely known that he’s actually in a relationship with his long-term partner, Michael Bauer.
As of May 2023, it seems that Steve is single, he hasn’t been married or engaged, and doesn’t have children.
