Career Beginnings – J. Cole

While at college, J. Cole became interested in a career in computer science, but later shifted to business and communication, as he was discouraged by witnessing the life of a lonely professor in computer science. He was very active within the college community, and graduated as magna cum laude though he didn’t receive his degree until 2015 due to an overdue library book, which led to the university withholding it. For a time he worked numerous odd jobs including as a mascot and a newspaper salesman.

He kept various song samples with him, and also had a notebook that contained songs he wrote over the years.

After creating a full- CDs-worth of work, he traveled to Roc the Mic Studio, hoping to catch the attention of rapper Jay Z. He was dismissed by the famous rapper, but that motivated him to make even more music, and in 2009 he released the mixtape “The Warm Up”, which eventually helped him gain the attention of Jay Z, leading him to be featured on Jay’s album “The Blueprint 3”.

The Success of J. Cole

After collaborating with Jay Z, J. Cole was signed to the Roc Nation imprint, and would release another mixtape “Friday Night Lights”. He earned fame with his mixtape releases as well as his constant features and work with other popular artists.

His album debuted at the top of the US Billboard 100 and he received a lot of praise for both his musical ability and production work.

He followed up his debut album with “Born Sinner”, and then another project – “2014 Forest Hills Drive” – which continued to build his fame. His second and third albums also achieved platinum certification, and led to his first Grammy nomination. In 2016 he had another chart-topping release with “4 Your Eyez Only”, which became another platinum-certified hit.

Two years later he produced “KOD”, making it his fifth number one album in five album releases.

Personal Life

Melissa met J. Cole while both of them were students at St. John’s University. They kept their relationship private and secret, even holding a secret wedding in 2015.

It wasn’t until a year later that J. Cole surprised many of his fans by admitting that he was married to his college sweetheart, while in an interview with director Ryan Coogler a year later, he revealed that he and his wife had a child.

Apart from their relationship, the couple is very active in supporting young women and adolescent single mothers through the Dreamville Foundation. J.
