He is the son of Tyrone and Anita Howard, and has ten siblings. He had a difficult childhood since he was physically abused by his father, and when just two, he was present when his father stabbed another man, was convicted of manslaughter, and served eleven months in prison. Following his father’s release, his parents divorced, and he was raised in Cleveland, Ohio by his great-grandmother Minnie Gentry, a famous actress.

Terrence made his television debut with the role of Jackie Jackson in the ABC mini-series “The Jacksons: An American Dream” in 1992, while he made his film debut in a support role in the 1993 thriller comedy “Who’s The Man?”, directed by Ted Demme. First Half of the 2000s
In the beginning of the 2000s, Terrence continued to line up successes, starring as Robby in the romantic drama “Angel Eyes” (2001) alongside Jennifer Lopez, played Lt. Lincoln A. Scott in the war drama “Hart’s War” (2002) next to Bruce Willis and Colin Farrell, and featured as T-Roy in the romantic drama “Love Chronicles” (2003). It was followed by his portrayal of Cameron in the 2004 drama “Crash”, which earned him seven awards, including two Black Reel, Screen Actors Guild, and NAACP Image Awards. Terrence then played Djay in Craig Brewer’s 2005 drama “Hustle & Flow”, winning such awards as a BET and a Satellite Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, also earning him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.

He then appeared as FBI Agent Cornelius in the political thriller “The Company You Keep” (2012), directed and produced by Robert Redford, played Franklin Birch in the thriller “Prisoners” (2013), alongside Hugh Jackman, and featured as Julius ‘Sugar’ Edmonds in the action thriller “Sabotage” (2014), next to Arnold Schwarzenegger. Thereafter, he was cast as Sheriff Arnold Pope in the first season of the Fox mystery sci-fi series “Wayward Pines” (2015-2016). Moreover, Terrence was chosen to play Lucious Lyon in the Fox musical drama series “Empire” (2015-present), winning a BET Award for Best Actor.
Somewhat surprisingly, in September 2019 Terrence announced his retirement from acting, saying that he was ‘tired of pretending’.
