Under the influence of his grandmother, Mac started playing guitar, and while in high school was a member of several bands – ‘Meat Cleavers’, ‘Sound Of Love’, and ‘Outdoor Miners’.
Career Beginnings
In April 2009, Mac DeMarco released his debut EP entitled “Heat Wave”, after which he went on a tour with the band ‘Japandroids’. In the following year, he made two more EPs, “Eating Like A Kid” and “Bossa Yeye”. In 2011, he moved from Vancouver to Montreal, where since he didn’t have enough money to make music, Mac participated in various medical experiments to earn money.”
Rise to Fame and Debut Album
However, he soon signed to the record label Captured Tracks, and released the EP, “Rock And Roll Night Club, in March 2012. Following this success, Mac recorded his debut full-length studio album entitled “2”, in October 2012. It spawned the single “Still Together” as well as the song “Moving Like Mike” which became licensed for a commercial for the retail outlet Target. Two years later, he released his second studio album “Salad Days”, including the two singles “Brother” and “Passing Out Pieces”.
The album reached No. 30 on the US Billboard 200 albums chart, and was nominated for the 2014 Polaris Music Prize.
Mini-LP ‘Another One’
In July 2015, Mac put out his fifth EP, “Some Other Ones”, followed by his debut mini-LP entitled “Another One”, distributed in August 2015. It spawned such singles as “The Way You’d Love Her”, “No Other Heart”, and “I’ve Been Waiting For Her”, and was ranked as one of the best albums of the year by Rough Trade, ‘The Guardian’, and ‘NME’.
It topped the US Billboard Top Rock Albums chart, and peaked at No. 25 on the US Billboard 200 albums chart. It was followed by his fifth EP, “Some Other Ones”.
Continued Success
In January 2017, Mac announced his third studio album with the singles, “This Old Dog” and “My Old Man”, and entitled “This Old Dog” was released in May of the same year. It peaked at No. 29 on the US Billboard 200 albums chart and topped the US Billboard Independent Albums chart.

Most recently, Mac made public his fourth studio album, entitled “Here Comes The Cowboy”, through Mac’s Record Label in March 2019. The album reached No. 10 on the US Billboard 200 albums chart, and was ranked as one of ‘The 20 Best Albums of 2019’ by the ‘GQ’ magazine, and includes such singles as “Nobody”, “All Of Our Yesterdays”, and “On The Square”.
