Crystal Lowe is a Canadian actress and a model, who has enjoyed fame largely thanks to her roles in horror films including “Children of the Corn: Revelation” (2001), “Final Destination 3” (2006), and “Wrong Turn 2: Dead End” (2007). She is also known as Rita Haywith-Dorman in the TV series “Signed Sealed, Delivered”, a television movie series aired from 2013 to 2018.

Born Yan-Kay Crystal Lowe on the 20th January 1981, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, she is of Chinese ancestry on her father’s side, and Scottish through her mother.

She moved with her parents to Hong Kong, and while there learned Cantonese. As she got older she became interested in modeling, though acting was her first desire, appearing first at the age of five. She competed in several beauty pageants, including Miss Teen Oriental, and appeared on various magazine covers. Furthermore, in her youth, Crystal was a sunshine calendar girl, and entered various swimsuit competitions.

Career Beginnings

Although at first she pursued modeling gigs, Crystal’s love for acting prevailed, and she made her acting debut in 1997 at 16 years of age, featuring as Nya in the TV sci-fi action film “Stargate SG-1”.

The same year she also appeared in another minor role, as Melina in the TV series “Breaker High”. Her career started getting better with the start of the new millennium, appearing in such horror films as “Sanctimony” (2000), written and directed by Uwe Boll, and starring Casper Van Dien, Michael Pare, and Eric Roberts, and “Children of the Corn: Revelation” (2001). Crystal continued with minor roles, but the films in which she appeared became blockbusters.

She had a minor role in the mystery thriller “Insomnia”, with Al Pacino in the lead role, then in 2006 featured in the fantasy horror-thriller film “Final Destination 3”; another horror film role was added to her portfolio in 2006, in “Scary Movie 4”.

Rise to Stardom

Although she appeared in a number of prominent films, her roles were only minor, and she struggled to get her career going until 2010, appearing in B production films such as “Yeti: Curse of the Snow Demon”, and others, before she secured the role of Zoe in the sci-fi comedy film “Hot Tub Time Machine”, starring John Cusack, Rob Corddry and Craig Robinson.

The same year, she starred in the fantasy horror film “The Lost Island”, while in 2012 she had the lead role in the sci-fi comedy horror film “A Little Bit Zombie”, alongside Kristopher Turner and Shawn Roberts, which won the Rising Star Award at the Canada International Film Festival.

After this, she was cast in the role of Toby Nance in the action-adventure series “Primeval: New World” (2012-2013), then the role of her career – she was selected as Rita Haywith-Dorman in the television movie “Signed Sealed Delivered” (2013), about postal workers who try and deliver ‘lost’ mail.

The first film lasted two hours, and was the pilot for the series, which started the following year. Although the original series, “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” lasted only a season with ten episodes, 12 sequels were made later, and aired from 2014 through 2018. The role made her extremely popular, propelling her to stardom.

Continued Success and Recent Endeavors

Crystal subsequently signed an exclusive deal with the Hallmark channel, and as a result appeared in a number of films produced by the channel.

In 2016 she was Lauren Wright in the television movie “Hearts of Christmas”, then in 2017 portrayed Callie in “Christmas at Holly Lodge”, then “Flip That Romance” in 2019, while in 2020 she was Ashley in the television movie “The Wrong Wedding Planner”, produced for the Lifetime Movies Network.

Director, Producer, and Restaurant Owner

In addition to her work as an actress, Crystal has tried herself as a producer and director. Her debut as a producer came in 2013 when she worked on the short film “Fade Out”, while in 2014 she made her debut as a director, behind the camera on the short film “Becoming Sophie”.

Her next project was the immensely popular short film “The Curtain” (2017), both as a director and producer, and which won a number of awards from several film festivals, including the Award of Excellence from the Canada Shorts Film Festival.

Aside from her career in performance arts, Crystal is also a successful businesswoman, as she owns and runs Hyde Restaurant in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Crystal made the news in 2020, when she was named the star of the film “The Wrong Wedding Planner”, which is just the beginning of the “Wrong” series on Lifetime Movies.
