He also possibly benefits somewhat from the success of his wife, who has a net worth estimated to be over $6 million.
Early Life and Education
David has lived most of his life away from the spotlight, especially during his childhood growing up in suburban Pennsylvania. During this time, he developed a passion for business and hoped to one day become rich. After matriculating from high school, he enrolled at Villanova University, taking up a degree in marketing and advertising. He focused on business management as he intended to make it big through these means at the start.
He then furthered his studies by enrolling at Columbia University for a master’s degree in business administration. Columbia is one of the most prestigious universities in the world, and is a part of the private Ivy League. The school is responsible for various advancements in the field of science, and many of its alumni have become prominent personalities in their own right. Following the completion of his master’s degree, he then looked for an opportunity in the finance industry.
A Career in Finance
Rubulotta’s first job was with the now-defunct Lehman Brothers, where he worked as a broker and for many years, developing his skills in trading, equity, and investment banking.
He gained wealth with the company, as he used his huge earnings to invest in various vehicles such as real estate. In 2008, Lehman would be one of the companies that would be significantly affected in the recession called the Global Financial Crisis, leading the company to file for bankruptcy. This was caused by a majority of its clients leaving the company, which in turn led to a drastic downturn in their earning capability.
He left long before the downfall of the company, as he was offered work as an executive in Citibank. He was hired as a Managing Director, actually introduced into the company by his wife, who had also found success in the world of finance.
Citibank is owned by Citigroup, and is known for its strong presence all around the world. While the bank was also significantly affected by the recession, they were supported by the US Treasury investing in it. Once the bank bounced back, the US government benefitted from the profit.
Wife – Erin Burnett
Erin grew up in Mardela Springs, Maryland, the daughter of an attorney, whose heritage can be traced back to Scotland and Ireland. After matriculating from high school, she enrolled into Williams College and completed a degree in political economy. She was also very athletic during her youth, playing with her university’s field hockey and lacrosse teams.
Afterwards she continued her studies, taking up a master’s degree in political science and economics.
Like her husband, she started her career in the finance industry, developing her experience and skills with the company Goldman Sachs, in which she worked as a financial analyst, specifically in their investment banking division. Eventually, her expertise was sought out by media companies, and she was contacted by CNN which she served as a writer part-time. She eventually left Goldman Sachs as she was offered a better position with CitiMedia which is a part of Citigroup. She became the division’s vice president, and her position there also opened the door for her husband.
After joining Citigroup, she was approached by Bloomberg Television, for which she worked as an anchor.
Recent Projects and Controversies
In 2005, Burnett moved from Bloomberg to CNBC, becoming the host of programs such as “Squawk on the Street” and “Street Signs”, both focused on business, and where she stayed for the next six years. During this time, she earned accolades for her investigative report on the company Transammonia, discovering that the company was buying ammonia from Iran, which led to the company cutting all ties with the country. While she had good experiences with CNBC, she found a better opportunity in CNN, which she joined in 2011.
With her contract with the company, she was given a program which was later called “Erin Burnett Out Front”, the hour focusing on breaking news with analysis. She has been accused of being biased in her reporting, especially when it comes to business news because of her background working with big financial companies on Wall Street. Despite that, CNN respects her opinions and allows her to express them as a part of her program. She’s been highly critical of former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, who has been outspoken with regards to Trump’s speculated conspiracies with Russia.
Personal Life
David met Erin through a mutual friend, apparently ‘love at first’ sight encounter. They were together for eight years before he proposed to her while on a vacation on a private island in the Caribbean. They married in December of 2012, with the wedding said to be Christmas themed, a lavish event with both of them wearing luxury brands in the presence of many guests. Since then, the couple has had two children.
David is known to be a heavy supporter of the Republican party, as is his wife. He has donated several times to political campaigns, including the 2009 campaign of Governor Chris Christie. He also donated money during 2016 presidential campaign directed at the Republican party.
