He’s best known for starring in movies such as “Knocked Up,” “Tropic Thunder,” “She’s Out of My League,” and “How to Train Your Dragon.”
Early life and education
Jay was born to Serge Baruchel, an antiques dealer, and Robyne Ropell, a freelance writer. He grew up in Montreal, Quebec, and has a younger sister named Taylor. Jay’s father is of Sephardic Jewish and French-Canadian descent, while his mother is of Irish Catholic and English descent. This diverse background shaped Jay’s upbringing, giving him an appreciation for different cultures and traditions.
Growing up, Jay was drawn to the world of performing arts. He began taking acting classes at the age of 12 and soon started participating in local theatre productions. Jay attended Roslyn Elementary School and went on to study at the Fine Arts Core Education School (F.A.C.E.) in Montreal. It was during these formative years that Jay began to hone his craft and develop his passion for acting.
Roles in movies
Jay made his feature film debut in 1999 with a minor role in the movie “Running Home”, however, it was his role as Kevin in the 2000 comedy drama “Almost Famous” that caught the attention of the entertainment industry, and paved the way for Jay to land more significant roles in movies and TV series. The film was written and directed by Cameron Crowe, and is partially based on his own experience as a teenage writer for “Rolling Stone” magazine in the 1970s. The film follows the story of a 15-year-old aspiring music journalist named William Miller, played by Patrick Fugit, who is given the opportunity to follow and write about the fictional band “Stillwater” on their concert tour. Jay played the role of Vic Munoz, one of William’s high school friends who helps him write and publish articles about the band.
In the following years, Jay appeared in numerous critically acclaimed and commercially successful films. In 2002, he starred alongside James Van Der Beek and Ian Somerhalder in the romantic comedy “The Rules of Attraction”, and two years later appeared in the Oscar-winning sports drama “Million Dollar Baby”, directed by Clint Eastwood, and which starred Hillary Swank as an aspiring boxer training to become a professional.
In 2007, Jay played a supporting role in Jude Apatow’s comedy “Knocked Up”, which starred Seth Rogen and Katherine Heigl. In the film, Rogen plays Ben Stone, a laid-back and irresponsible stoner who has a one-night stand with Heigl’s character, Alison Scott, a career-driven TV host. When Alison discovers she’s pregnant, she decides to keep the baby and gives Ben a chance to be involved in the child’s life. Jay plays the role of Jay, one of Ben’s best friends, who is also a struggling actor.
In the same year, Jay reunited with Seth Rogen in the short comedy “Jay and Seth Versus the Apocalypse”, which further established them as a great comedy duo.
Two years later, Jay starred as a high school student who believes he’s a reincarnation of Lev Trotsky, in the Canadian comedy “The Trotsky”, written and directed by Jacob Tierney. In 2010, he starred opposite Alice Eve in the romantic comedy “She’s Out of My League”, in which Jay played the character Kirk, a socially awkward airport security agent who is deemed by his friends as being unworthy of dating Molly, a gorgeous and successful event planner (played by Alice). Despite the mixed reception from the critics, the film was a moderate commercial success, and helped to establish Baruchel as a leading man in romantic comedies.
In the same year, Jay voiced the lead character, Hiccup, in the animated adventure film “How to Train Your Dragon”, centered on a young Viking boy who forms an unlikely friendship with a dragon he trained to hunt. The movie was both a commercial and critical success, and a first entry in what would become a trilogy – Jay reprised the role of Hiccup in the film’s two sequels “How to Train Your Dragon 2” (2014) and “How to Train Your Dragon: Hidden World” (2019), as well as in several short films, animated series, and video games based on the original movies.
After a series of comedies, Jay appeared in a more ‘serious’ role in the 2014 reboot of the classic sci-fi movie “RoboCop”. In 2019, he starred alongside Zoe Kazan, Eben Smed, and Jack Fulton in the drama “Kindness of Strangers”, which premiered at that year’s edition of the Berlin Film Festival.
In 2023, he played the lead role opposite Glenn Howerton in the biopic “BlackBerry”, which follows the rise and fall of the eponymous smartphone company.
