Who is Sara Martins?

Sara Martins was born on 19 August 1977, in Faro, Portugal, and is an actress, best known for her role in the television series “Death in Paradise” in which she plays the character Camille Bordey. She was with the show for four seasons before her character was written out.

The Wealth of Sara Martins

As of early-2020, Sara Martins’ net worth is estimated to be over $600,000, earned through a successful career in acting, dating back to 2000. She’s participated in various local and international productions during her career, including working on numerous films, both mainstream and independent.

Early Life

Sara is of Cape Verdean ancestry, and while she was born in Portugal, her family didn’t stay there long as they moved to France when she was three years old. At a young age, she developed a love for dance and the performing arts, leading her to take up ballet lessons. Her talents and dedication eventually led her to becoming a part of the Opera de Lyon which is known for its focus on varied performances, incorporating, dance, theatre, opera, and other productions. True to its name, it’s been known to be the home of the inaugural performances of various popular operas such as “Erwatung” and “La Dame Blanche”.

With her achievement, Sara became the first colored dancer to join the opera. However, due to her race, she was not able to advance to the Paris Opera which had no colored dancers and didn’t want to have one in their midst, as it didn’t fit the symmetry they had already achieved with predominantly white dancers from across Europe. Due to this, she diverted her attention and later moved to focus more on theatre, as it provided her more opportunities.

Education and Career Beginnings

Sara completed a high school education in France, obtaining her Baccalaureat with a focus on theatre.

After matriculating, she then completed the Diplôme d’études universitaires générales (DEUG) course in France, with a focus on law. She furthered her studies, staying in Paris where she became a student under the Ecole de Theatre Les Enfants Terribles, then enrolled at the French National Academy of Dramatic Arts which is considered one of the most selective drama schools in the country. There she completed her acting degree, learning how to perform proficiently in three languages.

One of her first professional projects was a local production of “Le Radeau de la Meduse”, which was shown at the Theatre National Populaire, based on the film of the same name, telling the story of the destruction of the French frigate the Meduse.

More theatre work came her way, and she was in local productions of “Race” and “Le Costume” or “The Suit”. In 2001, she made her television debut in the French show “Police District”.

During this part of her career, she dedicated more time to film work, with some of her notable projects including “Beyond the Ocean”, “Apres l’ocean”, “Girlfriends”, and “Tell No One”.

Death in Paradise

In 2011, Sara was cast in the television show “Death in Paradise” which is a British-French collaboration with BBC partnering with France Televisions. This would mark her debut in the British scene, and also her first work which involved comedy.

Her experience portraying cops in the past helped immensely with her role, as she played Detective Sergeant Camille Bordey who works in the fictional island of Saint-Marie. Other stars of the show include Ben Miller who plays Detective Inspector Richard Poole, with the duo solving various crimes, mostly murders on the island.

Production for the show was slightly delayed, as she injured her Achilles tendon while working on a stunt intended for the first episode. Throughout its run, the show has enjoyed high ratings and has been running for eight seasons, with a ninth and tenth already slated for production.

After Poole was killed during the third season, she worked alongside Kris Marshall as a new character introduced to the show. She was then written out during the fourth season, as her character returned to Paris. The decision to leave the show was her idea, as she felt that she needed to grow and wanted to take more risks in her career.

Life After Death in Paradise

Martins has since mostly done work on television, appearing as a recurring character in the show “American Odyssey”, aired on NBC and following the story of a team from the US Army which discovers that a US company has been funding terrorist groups from Mali; stars of the show include Peter Facinelli and Anna Friel.

At around the same time, she also worked on the French show “The Law of Alexandre” which is a part of the larger French series “The law of…”

In 2017, she made a guest appearance in the French series “Capitaine Marleau”, a show about the title character who is a captain of the National Gendarmerie, focusing on her various eccentricities. Her latest project is an appearance in the British series “Father Brown”, which is based on various GK Chesterton short stories. The show is one of the longest-running in Britain, and follows the titular character, a priest who solves various criminal cases in the 1950s.

Personal Life

Sara is single and she has not publicly talked about any romances she has had in the past. She may have a child as she’s posted photos of a baby on social media, though it is not known if it is hers or not. If it is her baby, it is likely that she is a single mom and is raising the child on her own. During her free time, she loves traveling and spending time in various locations in the world, often visiting France, and her country of origin Portugal. She is also a big fan of films, and often watches popular films during her free time.
