Who is Robert Griffin III?

Robert Lee “RG3”Griffin III was born on 12 February 1990, in Okinawa, Japan to parents Robert Griffin Jr. and Jacqueline Ross – his parents were both US Army sergeants stationed in Japan during that time. When they went back to the US they were stationed in Fort Lewis in Tacoma, Washington, then assigned to New Orleans, Louisiana. In 1997, his parents retired from the army and settled permanently in Copperas Cove, Texas.

College Sports

Robert was a star in three different sports in Copperas Cove High School. While he excelled in basketball, football, and track, it was football that paved the way for his college recruitment. Several universities were courting him to play for them, including Houston, Stanford, Illinois, and Washington State. At first, he wanted to play for Houston but when the head coach transferred to Baylor University, he decided to join him there. Another reason for his decision was the university’s track and field program.

His rookie year with the Baylor Bears football team was a success, and he was awarded 2008 Offensive Freshman of the Year in the Big 12 Conference.

His performance throughout his college years was remarkable. Even if his team didn’t make it to the National Championship, he ended his college football career winning the Heisman Trophy, making history by being the first Baylor player to win it, and also the first such player missing out on the National Championship game since Tim Tebow in 2007. He graduated in 2010 with a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, and continued studying for a Master’s degree in Communications the following year.

Robert’s track and field record was also remarkable. He won the 400-meter hurdles in the NCAA Midwest Regional Championship, as well as in the Big 12 Conference Championship. He even qualified to compete in the Olympic trials, but only advanced to the semifinals.

Pro Football

In 2012 he entered the NFL Draft, and he was the second overall pick by the Washington Redskins.

Robert Griffin III

He wore number 10 jersey with his Griffin III on the back, making him the first professional player in the four major sports to use a Roman numeral with his name. His rookie season was a huge success, and he earned the title NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year 2012, and was selected to the Pro Football Writers Association (PFWA) All-Rookie Team. He was also given the chance to be included in the All-Star 2013 Pro Bowl, but due to injuries he wasn’t able to make it.

Things did not go well during the following season. Robert failed to duplicate his rookie performance, and his not so great stats continued the next season. It didn’t help that he kept getting injured, and even had a concussion in 2015; the Redskins didn’t have any choice but to release him in 2016 to the Cleveland Browns, on a $15 million contract for two years.

He became the team’s starting quarterback, but was again injured and had to be sidelined. After one season, he was released by the Browns and became a free agent.

In 2018, he signed with the Baltimore Ravens on a one year contract, and was the back-up quarterback for the team. He performed well during the season and so his contract was renewed for two more years, and he’s currently doing great with the team.

Previous Relationship

Robert was previously married to Rebecca Liddicoat, a college sweetheart and fellow Baylor student in 2013. They had a daughter in 2015 but the marriage went sour, and in 2016, Robert filed for a divorce.

Interesting Facts

  • Grete was supposed to be training for the 2020 Olympics, but was sidelined once again as she gave birth to their second child.
  • Grete was once dubbed as a homewrecker by some fans as they thought she was the reason that Robert’s first marriage didn’t work out, but it was revealed that Robert was separated from his first wife for several months before she entered the picture. However, she was the reason he filed for divorce, since he wanted to be single and free to pursue her without any legal issues. His first wife was reportedly blindsided by the divorce and was hoping to reconcile with him.
  • Grete’s name was tattooed on the arm of Robert, and later on she reciprocated by having his name on her arm as well.
