Born on 28 May 1983, in Millersport, Ohio, Roman Atwood started creating videos during his teens, though it wasn’t until 2006 that he officially started his independent film director career by creating “The Nerd Herd”, a series of comedy DVD’s.

While he spent years working with other projects, finally in 2010 he created his own YouTube channel named “Sketch Empire”, and tried to grow his personal brand by launching his self-titled YouTube channel, on which he posted his first video – “Epic Cooler Prank!!” – setting his path not only as a content creator but as a prankster. To date, his first video has attracted more than six million views.

Atwood’s videos slowly became viral ,and with it, he started gaining a solid following, not only on his channel but also on other social media platforms. The quality of his content improved as well, and he became widely known for his comedy style which involved pranking random people on the streets, his friends and family. Brittney also became known by the media for her constant appearances in his videos, sometimes as an accomplice to his stunts, including at times being on the receiving end of them.

Not leaving his partner out of the fun, Roman posted the video “Anniversary Prank Backfires” in November 2013. In it he pretended to be confessing an infidelity to Brittney, however, she was aware of the prank and ruined his plans by confessing a fake infidelity of her own.

Although most Atwood’s pranks turn out well, in March 2014 he was arrested and accused of inducing public panic after faking the robbery of a bank; he was taken to court but won the case.

Dead Child Pranks

Atwood’s is often known for being the man who has killed his son twice. This reputation is caused by his own doing, as he has made two videos of faking his own child’s death, for the purpose of shocking Brittney.

The first of these videos was uploaded in November 2014 and entitled “Killing My Own Kid Prank!!”. In it Atwood pretends his son Kane is dressed in a Spider-Man costume, throwing what is actually a mannequin downstairs and causing distress and tears to a worried Brittney, who is led to believe her son is dead.

The second video of this series was uploaded in October 2015, though this time the prank involved a fire explosión, with once again Brittney as the victim. These videos have put Atwood in the spotlight and brought him vast fame, though he has also been heavily criticized for his callousness.

Caitlin Dewey from The Washington Post, wasn’t very kind at describing the YouTuber: ‘There are a disheartening number of Internet buffoons competing for the honor of most offensive YouTube ‘prank.’ But Roman Atwood, the 32-year-old who has twice pretended to kill his own toddler, may definitively take the cake.’

In 2016 Roman Atwood completely changed his content, finally marking the end of his YouTube career as a comedian, by focusing on uploading more content onto his own Vlog channel.

Documenting details about his pranks and life was not something new for him though, as his first vlog on his secondary YouTube channel dates back to 2013. However, in this new take of said channel, he uploaded more about his family and his journey as a dad.

We are rushing back home to Ohio to figure everything out. Please pray for my family and especially for my father’.

For her part, Brittney posted an Instagram story thanking people for their support during the difficult moment: ‘We are home now. Just want to thank everyone for all the love and prayers.’
