He studied at a local high school in Orchard Park, New York State, and was mostly into playing football during his four years there; Lex showed talent, and upon matriculating in 1976 was offered a football scholarship to Pennsylvania State University; he moved to the University of Miami after only a year, and there played both football and basketball.
