Early life and education

David was raised in Pittsburgh alongside his two older brother, by their mother Margaret Clement Conrad who was a librarian, and their father James Watson Conrad who was an engineer.

He was interested in playing football, performing in school plays and learning how to play the guitar. Upon matriculation in 1985, David enrolled at Brown University to study history, but quit college before graduation – while on his way up in the film industry, David worked multiple jobs to financially support himself, such as being a carpenter, a housepainter and a barista.
