Max Gail is an American veteran actor, who came to stardom with the role of Detective Stan ‘Wojo’ Wojciehowicz in the TV comedy series “Barney Miller”, from 1975 until 1982. Since then, he has had numerous roles, including Mike Corbin in the soap opera “General Hospital” (2018-2020), which is his most recent role.

Born Maxwell Trowbridge Gail Jr. on the 5th April 1943, in Detroit, Michigan USA, he is the son of Maxwell Trowbridge Gail, a businessman, and his wife, Mary Elizabeth. Max is a twin child, with sister Mary Gail. He spent his childhood in Grosse Ile, Michigan, and attended Williams College. Before he started acting, Max was an instructor at University Liggett School.
Career Beginnings
Max’s career started in the early ‘70s, beginning on stage by making his debut as Chief Bromden in the play “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”, performed at the Little Fox Theatre in San Francisco, California, and three years later reprised his role when the play moved to New York. He began auditioning for on-screen roles too, and in 1971 appeared in the film “The Organization”, making several other appearances the same year, though his work was cut from the final versions, and he was left without credits.
Rise to Stardom
Nevertheless, roles followed, and in 1974 Max was Albanel in the television movie “Mr. and Mrs Cop”, followed by in 1975 securing his earliest noteworthy role, as Detective Stan ‘Wojo’ Wojciehowicz in the TV comedy series “Barney Miller”, co-starring with Hal Linden; in seven years, Max received two Primetime Emmy award nominations. While working on the series, he featured in several other successful projects, including the television movies, “Curse of the Black Widow” (1977), and “Desperate Women” in 1978. After the series ended, he portrayed Llewellen Farley Jr. in the TV series “Whiz Kids”, from 1983 to 1984, and co-starred in the drama film “Heartbreakers”, with Peter Coyote, Nick Mancuso and Carole Laure as the main stars of the film.

Throughout the ‘80s he appeared in indie films, and 1988 starred in the action crime-drama film “Man Against the Mob”, and co-starred in the drama film “Judgment in Berlin”.
Career Decline
In the ‘90s Max’s popularity began declining, and he featured mainly in minor roles in independent films, without any major success. However, he made one appearance that is worthy of note, co-starring with the film and TV legend Chuck Norris in the action film “Forest Warrior”. He began the new millennium with a couple of guest roles in TV series, such as “18 Wheels of Justice” and “Chicken Soup for the Soul”, while in 2001 he appeared in a few television movies, including “The Perfect Wife”, but again without major success.
From 2006 to 2007 he portrayed Wendal Halbert in the TV series “Sons & Daughters”, and in 2007 he was Merle in the popular TV soap opera “Days of Our Lives”.
Max continued with guest roles in a number of series, in “NCIS”, “Cold Case” and others, before he was selected for the role of Jack in the TV series “Gary Unmarried”, featuring in seven episodes of the Primetime Emmy Award-nominated series, which re-ignited his career. In 2013 he featured in the award-winning biopic entitled “42”, about Jackie Robinson, the first African-American to play in Major League Baseball, and continued with film roles, featuring in the horror film “Dark House” (2014), and the romantic drama “I’ll See You in My Dreams” (2015).
In 2015 he also appeared in the second season of the popular TV comedy series “Review”, starring Andrew Daly, Jessica St. Clair, and Megan Stevenson, and in 2017 he featured in the western romantic-drama film “The Hero”, joining such stars as Sam Elliott, Krysten Ritter, Laura Prepon and Nick Offerman, among others.

From 2018 until the present, Max has been portraying Mike Corbin in the soap opera “General Hospital”, so far, appearing in more than 100 episodes of the Golden Globe Award-nominated series, which has won the hearts of many during its span of 58 seasons. Meantime Max has worked on other projects too, including the TV mini-series “Quest” (2019) and the war drama film “The Last Full Measure”.
Most recently, Max co-starred in the sports drama film “Jumping the Gun” (2020). Despite being in his late 70s, Max is still very active in the entertainment industry, and looking forward to new projects to work on.

In 1986 Max married his second wife Nan Harris, and they have two children together, Maxwell and Grace. He and Nan also raised Nan’s nephew, named Delondon, who was born in 1979.

Max Gail is also the owner of the production company, Full Circle, through which he produces documentaries with topics such as Native Americans, nuclear issues, and Agent Orange, among others.
He didn’t study acting at the university as he has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and a Master’s degree in International Finance – before pursuing a career as an actor he was a school teacher, also played piano in night bars, and waited tables, as well as working on construction sites.
He spent days living in a teepee on his property in Malibu while remodeling his home; he wanted circular rooms, arches, and no straight lines.
Max won a Daytime Emmy Award for his work on “General Hospital”, but the recent events of coronavirus spread and his age being highly affected by the virus, he is doubtful to return on the “General Hospital” set.

Sadly, one of the other guys who played with us, Bill Listman, passed away last year. Looking at your bio, you have had a great career in show business.
