In the 2000s, he started to venture away from his Disney roles, and worked on the television movie “Daydream Believers: The Monkees’ Story” a biographical movie telling the story of the US band which found fame in the late 1960s.

In 2005, he worked on a film adaptation of the musical “Rent” in which he played the character, Steve, also providing the vocals for the musical pieces which became a part of its soundtrack, then worked on another musical in New York – “See What I Wanna See” – alongside future wife Idina Menzel.

He also worked on various independent film projects such as “Manslaughter” and “Noise”, but in recent years he’s been more focused on his theatrical work, appearing in Off-Broadway productions.

He also found a second career as a therapist, often working with families and couples. He is one of the primary therapists at the Avalon Malibu Institute in New York City, pursuing this career after taking up a master’s degree in psychology and criminal justice.

Wife – Idina Menzel

Idina spent most of her youth in New Jersey and New York. She is of Jewish descent, with her grandparents originally from Russia before moving to the US.

She attended Syosset High School but during her teens her parents divorced, leading her to find a side-job as a singer for weddings. She continued developing her vocal talents and earning money on the side, while studying at New York University where she completed a degree in Drama in 1992.

In the mid-1990s, she began working in theatre, making her way to various Broadway and off-Broadway productions, successfully auditioning for many, including “Rent”, “Bring in da Noise, Bring in da Funk”, and “The Vagina Monologues”. She also embarked on a singing career, releasing a solo album before focusing her attention back to theatre, starring in a Broadway production of “Wicked” which won her a Tony Award for Best Leading Actress.

Following this production, she appeared in the play “See What I Wanna See”, which continued the positive reviews and the award nominations.

The Success of Idina Menzel

With her success in theatre, Menzel was approached by film producers to star in the film adaptation of “Rent”, which was released in 2005, and was responsible for her first Tony Award nomination so early in her career. She also received her third Tony Award nomination for her performance in “If/Then”.

In recent years, she’s also made waves in the television and film areas – in 2010 she was in the television show “Glee” playing the character Shelby Corcoran for three years, known for its musical performances, often various renditions of hit songs.

One of her most popular achievements is voicing Queen Elsa in the 2013 film “Frozen”. She sang the characters’ songs in the film, and the song “Let it Go” would become an international success, winning an Academy Award as well as a Grammy Award. The song made her the only Tony Award-winning actress to reach the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In 2019, she reprised her role in “Frozen II” which gained positive reviews, and released the album “Holiday Wishes”, which reached sixth spot on the Billboard 200.

Personal Life

Before meeting Lohr, Menzel was married to actor Taye Diggs whom she met in the production of “Rent”; they had a child together and stayed married for a decade before divorcing. Aaron met the actress through various stage productions, and their friendship blossomed into a romance. The two confirmed their relationship in 2015, as they appeared together during the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner. They then confirmed that they were living together after buying a home in Los Angeles. The pair became engaged the following year, and then married in 2017.
