Ned is not related to Brian Dennehy, the famous American actor best known for his roles in movies “Presumed Innocent” in 1990, “Romeo + Juliet” in 1996 and “Death of a Salesman” in 2000.

Childhood and education

Ned was raised an only child in Ireland by his father who was a fisherman, and his mother who was a seamstress.

He became interested in acting while attending a local high school, where he was a member of the school’s drama club and appeared in many plays performed at the school, however, he only considered acting a hobby and wanted to focus on his education – he also enjoyed playing soccer and watching live matches.

Upon matriculation in 1983, he enrolled at a college from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1987, and Ned worked several jobs for the following nine years before launching his acting career.

Roles in movies

Ned has been credited with appearing in about 100 movies and TV series, and we are going to mention some of his most notable performances in this article.

Ned made his debut film appearance when he played the lead character Petrol Pump Attendant in the short drama “Quickfix” in 1996, written and directed by Eamon Little, which also starred Andrew Bennet and Declan Greene.

However, he only gained recognition 14 years later, after playing Scared Man in the critically acclaimed fantasy movie “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1” starring Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, and which follows Harry, Ron and Hermione’s final stand against Lord Voldemort – the movie won 15 awards and was nominated for 55 others, including two Oscars. Ned went on to star as The Hitchhiker in the short comedy horror “The Box” written and directed by Adam Collins, which follows Niall who picks up a hitchhiker and his strange cardboard box. In 2018, Ned appeared as Brother Swan in the action fantasy horror movie “Mandy”, starring Nicolas Cage, and was a hit, winning 13 awards while it was nominated for 40 others.

The year 2018 also saw Ned portray George Moore in the documentary drama “Citizen Lane”, which is about Lane who is trying to recover 39 paintings of famous artists for Ireland. He went on to appear in the Dathai Keane’s drama “Finky” in 2019, about a young musician who becomes crippled after a car accident, and then joins a circus. In the same year, Ned played Griffin in the comedy “Supervized”.

Three of his latest notable performances in movies have been in the Irish crime drama “Calm with Horses” and the New Zealand action comedy “Guns Akimbo” which starred Daniel Radcliffe, both in 2019, and the 2020 Canadian fantasy movie “Undergods” which was written and directed by Chino Moya.

Roles in TV series

Ned made his debut TV series appearance in 1997, when he guest starred as Prosecutor in the episode “Oliver Twist” of the adventure comedy drama series “The Wonderful World of Disney”, but he didn’t gain recognition until 2013, when he began portraying Charlie Strong, the lead character in the British period crime drama “Peaky Blinders”, which also starred Cillian Murphy, Paul Anderson and Helen McCrory, and is about a gang based in England in the 1900s – the series won 17 awards and was nominated for 37 others.

He went on to play the lead character, Letters Molloy in the British drama “Banished”, about several British people who are sent to live in Australia because of the crimes they committed in Britain – the movie was nominated for seven awards.

A few of Ned’s following roles were in four episodes of the drama “Clean Break” as Noel Blake in 2015, another drama “Dickensian” in which he portrayed Ebeneezer Scrooge in 13 episodes in 2016, and the series “An Klondike” (also known as “Dominion Creek”) in which he played Captain Pat ‘Irish Pat’ Galvin in eight episodes in 2017. Ned played the supporting character Paddy Fitzgerald in the science fiction drama “Glitch” which starred Patrick Brammall and Emma Booth, and is about six people who come back to life after being dead for many years, but with no memories.

Ned played Father Etienne in the French historical fiction series “Versailles” in 2017, guest starred in a single episode of the American horror science fiction series “Nightflyers” in 2018, and was then cast to play the lead character, Duke of Hell Hastur in the fantasy comedy series “Good Omens” which starred David Tennant and Michael Sheen, and is a tale which features an Antichrist, a demon and an angel.

Three of his most recent notable roles in TV series have been in the mystery crime drama “Dublin Murders” and the Irish coming-of-age comedy “The Young Offenders” both in 2019, and the historical drama “Outlander” in 2020.

Awards

Married?

Ned has been keeping details of his love life hidden from the media’s attention, and many people have been wondering whether or not he is a married man. There are rumors circulating the internet that he was in a relationship with Leila Gurruwiwi, an Australian media commentator and TV show producer, who appeared alongside him in the series “Glitch” between 2015 and 2017 – according to the rumors, the two showed too much chemistry between them in the series (Leila’s character Kalinda is Ned’s character’s love interest) which is why some believe that they also dated in real life.

Ned hasn’t commented on the rumors regarding his love life and his link to Leila, and as of September 2020, he is single, hasn’t married and doesn’t have children.

Hobbies and other interests

Ned’s main hobby is travelling, and his career as an actor has made it possible for him to travel around the world while his dream travel destination is New York City – he is also interested in the real estate business, and it’s believed that he has multiple properties in New York.

He is interested in fast cars, and has a small collection of old-timers.

What a great pleasure it was to welcome one of the 'Peaky Blinders' to the studio today, Mr. Ned Dennehy.
