Who is DB Woodside?

David Bryan (D. B.) Woodside was born in Queens, New York City USA, on 25 July 1969 – his zodiac sign is Leo and he holds American nationality. He is an actor who is perhaps still best known for his portrayal of one of the lead characters, Melvin Franklin, the bass singer in the biographical musical mini-series “The Temptations”, which also starred Charles Malik Whitfield and Terron Brooks and which follows the popular singers who founded the band – the movie won four awards and was nominated for 18 others, including a Golden Globe.

Early life and education

B. was raised an only child in New York City, by his father who was a taxi driver and his mother who worked at a local market as a cashier – as the family had barely enough money to pay rent and put food on the table, D. B. promised to himself that he would focus on his education and one day help his parents.

While attending high school, D. B. took his girlfriend to a theatre play, which is when he became interested in acting, and soon started practicing his acting skills at the same theatre. He was also physically active during his teenage years, as he played basketball and had several training sessions at the gym each week.

Upon matriculation in 1987, he enrolled at the State University of New York at Albany, from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1991, then continued his education at the Yale School of Drama, from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1993.

Roles in TV series

DB has been credited with over 50 appearances in movies and TV series, and we are about to mention some of his most notable performances in this article.

He made his debut TV series appearance in 1996, when he also portrayed his first lead character – Aaron Mosely – in the crime mystery drama “Murder One”, also starring Mary McCormack, Michael Hayden and J. C. MacKenzie, and which follows the defense attorney Theodore Hoffman who has to defend Neil Avedon, a famous actor who is addicted to drugs and alcohol and has been charged with murder. The series was a huge success, winning 12 awards while it was nominated for 18 others, including two Golden Globes.

DB reprised his role in the mini-series “Murder One: Diary of a Serial Killer” in 1997, and then went on to appear in single episodes of many series such as the science fiction mystery thriller “Prey” in 1998 and the comedy crime drama “Snoops” in 1999.

The year 2001 saw him star as Daniel Reide in six episodes of the crime mystery drama “The Division”, which follows the lives of five policewomen working in San Francisco, and in 2002, DB began portraying Principal Robin Wood in the critically acclaimed action fantasy drama “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”. The series was created by Joss Whedon, starred Sarah Michelle Gellar, Nicholas Brendon and Alyson Hannigan, and follows the girl Buffy who is fighting vampires together with her friends – the series was a hit in the US as it won 52 awards, while it was nominated for 130 others, including a Golden Globe.

DB’s following lead role came in 2003, when he was invited to star as President Wayne Palmer in the award-winning action crime drama “24”, which also starred Kiefer Sutherland and Mary Lynn Rajskub, and for his performance DB was nominated for a Golden Nymph Award for Outstanding Actor – Drama Series at the Monte-Carlo TV Festival. The following years saw him star in single episodes of many series such as the crime mystery drama “Numb3rs” in 2008, the drama “Lie to Me” and the comedy crime drama “Castle” both in 2009.

He went on to portray supporting characters in two comedy dramas – “Hellcats” and “Parenthood” – and in 2011 DB was invited to star as Malcolm in 37 episodes of the romantic comedy drama “Single Ladies”, remaining a member of the cast until 2014.

From 2014 to 2018, he played supporting character Jeff Malone in the comedy drama “Suits” – which received good reviews – while the year 2019 saw him reprise his role as Jeff in the drama “Pearson”.

Two of DB’s most recent roles in TV series have been in the episode “Big Daddy” of the comedy drama “Dealbreakers” in 2019, and in 77 episodes of the crime fantasy drama “Lucifer”, starring Tom Ellis, Lauren German and Kevin Alejandro, and is about Lucifer Morningstar, who leaves Hell and starts living on Earth in Los Angeles, ironically known as ‘The City of Angels’.

Roles in movies

DB made his debut film appearance in 1998, portraying Forrest in the action thriller movie “Scar City”, written and directed by Ken Sanzel, and which starred Stephen Baldwin, Tia Carrere and Renee Estevez.

The year 1999 saw him play the supporting character Anthony in the romantic drama “After All”, but which didn’t attract much attention, then in 2000 he appeared in both the crime action thriller “Romeo Must Die” and the comedy drama “More Dogs Than Bones”. He played his first lead film character, Addison in the drama “Flashpoint” in 2002, which also starred Billy Burke and Saffron Burrows, and received good critiques. Two of his following roles were in 2003, in the crime drama “The Law and Mr. Lee”, and the romantic comedy drama “Easy” – written and directed by Jane Weinstock. DB also appeared in his first short movie “Something More” in that year, and then appeared in another short, “First” in 2007.

He played the supporting character Tyrone in Tina Mabry’s drama “Mississippi Damned” in 2009, and was then invited to appear in the drama “Back” in 2009, the thriller “The Inheritance” (both a critical and financial failure) in 2011, and the crime action comedy “Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2” in 2015.

Two of his most recent roles in movies have been in the crime thriller drama “The Man in 3B” in 2015, which starred Lamman Rucker and Christian Keyes, and the short comedy “Smile” in which he starred alongside Kevin Alejandro and Emerson Basco in 2019.

Love life and wife

DB met his the famous American actress Golden Brooks in 2006, on the set of a TV series they were both cast to appear in, and they started dating days later – Brooks is today known for her roles in the series “Girlfriends” and the movie “The Darkest Minds”, while she has also become a screenwriter and producer.

On 1 September 2009, Brooks gave birth to their daughter Dakota Tao Brooks-Woodside, and rumors started circulating the internet about how Brooks had become DB’s wife exchanging their vows in secret, however, both of them denied the rumors, but then split in the following year.

DB hasn’t talked about any other women he might have been with before he met Brooks. or after their split, and as of September 2020 he is single, hasn’t married and has a daughter.

Hobbies and other interests

One of DB’s hobbies is being active on his Instagram account, as he’s uploaded over 520 pictures, and has over 1.5 million people currently following him on the popular network.

He is a lover of animals, and is at the moment fostering a dog, Mia who has been left without a home as her past owners welcomed a baby, and Mia has too much energy for the family now – DB has helped many other dogs such as Mia find permanent homes.

He is a supporter of the movement Black Lives Matter, and has walked several peaceful protests – he is also a philanthropist and has donated money to several charity foundations and organizations.

DB has his own favorite actors and actresses, some of whom are Denzel Washington, Will Smith and Rosario Dawson, and some of his favorite movies are “I Am Legend”, “I, Robot” and “Seven Pounds”.
