Who is Gretchen Corbett, and what is she doing now?

Gretchen Hoyt Corbett was born in the small village of Camp Sherman in Portland, Oregon on 13 August 1947 – her zodiac sign is Leo and she holds American nationality. She is an actress and a theatre director, who is perhaps still best known for her portrayal of Beth Davenport in the mystery crime drama series “The Rockford Files”, aired from 1974 to 1980, and which starred James Garner, Noah Beery Jr. and Joe Santos. The series follows the life of an ex-convict who became a private investigator, and won eight awards while it was nominated for 27 others, including four Golden Globes.

There have been some rumors circulating the internet claiming that Gretchen has retired from acting, however, she is still very much involved, and has recently been cast to appear in the upcoming drama “Pig”, set to be released in late 2020.

Early life and education

Gretchen was raised alongside her sister and two brothers in Portland, by their father Henry Ladd Corbett who was a businessman, and their mother Katherine Minahen who was a housewife – Gretchen’s great-great-grandfather Henry Winslow Corbett was a Senator for Oregon and a businessman, while her grandfather Henry Lad Corbett was a civic leader and a politician.

Gretchen rode her horse eight miles to school and back every day, and while she didn’t like it at the time, later stated in an interview that it was actually a good life looking back at it. She was only seven years old when she attended the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and became interested in acting, and went on to attend the Catlin Gabel School at which she appeared in many plays. Upon matriculation in 1965, she enrolled at Carnegie Tech in Pittsburgh to study drama, but quit after only a year as to focus on her acting career.

Gretchen has been credited with roughly 70 roles in movies and TV series, and we are going to mention some of her most notable performances in this article.

She made her debut film appearance in 1969, when she was cast to portray Barbara in the comedy movie “Out of It”, written and directed by Paul Williams, and two years later Gretchen played The Girl in the horror mystery drama “Let’s Scare Jessica to Death”, which follows a woman who, after moving into an allegedly haunted house, starts thinking that she might be losing her mind. The year 1975 saw her portray the supporting character Jenny in the drama “Knuckle”, which failed to attract much attention, and in 1976 played Lois in the historical war drama “Farewell to Manzanar”, which starred Yuki Shimoda, Nobu McCarthy and Dori Takeshita, and which is about Jeanne Wakatsuki, a seven-year old girl who is detained allegedly as an enemy alien in the camp Manzanar in California after the Pearl Harbor attack.

Gretchen went on to play supporting roles in both the science fiction horror thriller “The Savage Bees” and the comedy “The Fatal Weakness”, before being invited to portray one of the lead characters Linda Mae Meyers in the biographical romantic drama “The Other Side of the Mountain: Part II”. The following years saw her appear in movies such as the crime thriller “Secrets of Three Hungry Wives” in 1978, the drama “Mandrake” in 1979, and the adventure family drama “High Ice” in 1980. Gretchen was praised for her portrayal of Carole Frische in the comedy drama “Million Dollar Infield” in 1982, but the movie itself failed to attract much attention. In 1984 she played a supporting role as Joanne Braithwaite in the one-hour drama movie “Things Are Looking Up”, and the following year saw her star as Rita Aaron in the drama “North Beach and Rawhide”.

1n 1991, Gretchen portrayed Aunt Blanche in the drama “Final Verdict”, and went on to appear in many movies in the ‘90s, including the drama “Moment of Truth: Why My Daughter” in 1993, the action crime drama “The Rockford Files: If the Frame Fits…” in 1996 and the drama “A Change of Heart” in 1998. Gretchen took a 10-year break from acting after her role in “The Rockford Files: If It Bleeds… It Leads” in 1999, and three of her most recent appearances in films have been in the thriller drama “Bucksville” in 2011, the short mystery drama “Evelyn” in 2012, and the drama “Lorelei” in 2020.

Roles in TV series

Gretchen made her debut TV series appearance in 1967, when she was cast to play Meg Stewart in the drama “Love Is a Many Splendored Thing”, while the following years saw her guest star in a single episode of many series, such as the crime drama “N.Y.P.D.” in 1968, the biographical historical drama “NET Playhouse” in 1972, and the horror mystery drama “The Wide World of Mystery” in 1973.

In 1974, Gretchen guest starred in the episode “Town in Chains” of the western series “Gunsmoke”, and subsequently appeared in single episodes of numerous series before being cast to guest star in four episodes of the critically acclaimed drama “Marcus Welby, M. D.” in 1976, which follows two doctors Marcus Welby and Steven Kiley as they treat their patients.

Gretchen’s following notable performance was in the drama “Family” in 1980, which starred Sada Thompson, Gary Frank and James Broderick, and follows the lives of the Lawrence family living in Pasadena, California. She then appeared in the episode “Plain Favorite” of the comedy series “One Day at a Time” in 1981, the episode “Deep Cover” of the crime drama “Today’s F.B.I.” in 1982, and the episode “Peace with Honor” of the drama “The Mississippi” in 1983, before she was invited to star as June Sterling in the 1985 action fantasy adventure series “Otherworld”, also starring Sam Groom and Tony O’Dell in the story of a family who gets thrown into another dimension, and now has to find a way back home while hiding from the hunters who are trying to kill them.

One of Gretchen’s most recent and most notable performances in a TV series was in 2017, when she portrayed Gretchen Eunice Oliver in the comedy “Portlandia”, which was created by Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein, who also starred in the series parodying life in Portland.

Love life and relationships

Gretchen prefers to keep her personal matters to herself, but it is known that she was once romantically linked to Robin Gammel, a Canadian actor who is perhaps still known for his roles in the movies “Raid on Entebbe”, “The Concorde… Airport ‘79” and “The Star Chamber”. They started dating sometime in the ‘70s, and in 1979 Gretchen gave birth to their daughter Winslow Corbett who has also become an actress. Gretchen and Robin dated for several more years before splitting ways for unknown reasons.

Gretchen hasn’t talked about any other men she might have been with since her split from Robin while many of her fans have claimed to have seen her walking hand in hand with different men in the streets of Los Angeles over the years. As she hasn’t commented on these rumors regarding ,her love life, Gretchen is presumed single as of September 2020, hasn’t married and has one daughter.

Hobbies and other interests

Gretchen is a philanthropist who has donated money to several foundations, while she was also the artistic director of the Haven Project, launched to help underprivileged children who are interested in acting practice at theatres in Portland.

Her main hobby during her 20s and 30s was travelling, and Gretchen has been all around the US, while she preferred to travel overseas – some of her favorite cities amongst those she has visited are Paris in France, Athens in Greece and Tokyo in Japan.
