Early Life, Education, and Career Beginnings

Sarah grew up in St. Johns, and at a young age began developing a love for the performing arts. She began with dancing, taking lessons as she grew up before she was introduced to the world of acting during her early teens. Her parents supported her, and she then began taking acting lessons. Wanting to find a breakthrough in the entertainment industry early, the family decided to move to Toronto, so that she could be closer to most of the opportunities.

After matriculating from high school she enrolled at Ryerson University, where she became a part of its Theatre School.

The university is known to be one of the largest undergraduate schools in the country, containing the largest undergraduate business school as well. It offers numerous programs, and is distinguished on several fronts. During her time there, she also pursued a few of her first professional endeavors,  making her debut in 2002’s “Random Passage”, a mini-series based on the novel of the same name written by Bernice Morgan. It tells the story of citizens of a small port town which relies on catching fish for its livelihood.

Rise to Prominence

After her work in “Random Passage”, Powers took a few years away to focus on her studies.

Upon graduation, she quickly returned to looking for professional acting projects, and made guest appearances in “The Best Years” and “The Listener”. In 2007 she made her film debut, appearing as Denise in the direct-to-video movie “American Pie Presents: Beta House”. The film is a part of the “American Pie” franchise, though these later sequels paled in comparison to the original trilogy that made it very popular.

The following year, Sarah worked on the film “Repo! The Genetic Opera”, then in 2009 she gained one of her most notable early roles, as she was cast in the television series “Wild Roses” playing Lucy Henry.

The show aired on CBC originally under the name “Cowgirls”, but later changed it as the name wasn’t well received by many circles. It tells the story of a family of oil developers residing in Canada, who want to take back the land they own after their deceased head gave it away to another family.

Continued Acting Work

While working on “Wild Roses”, Sarah also made an appearance in the film “Saw V”, which is part of another big franchise. The film details the events leading up to Detective Mark Hoffman becoming the apprentice of the Jigsaw Killer, and was created by many of those who worked in previous “Saw” films. In 2010, she was cast in a recurring role in “Republic of Doyle”, appearing sporadically in the show for the next few years.

While working on that show, she made guest appearances in “Californication” and “Murdoch Mysteries”, and was also cast in the television movie “The Good Witch’s Family”, which aired on Hallmark. In 2015, she was then cast in the series “Killjoys” as Illenore Pawter Seyah Simms. The space adventure series aired on CTV, following the story of three bounty hunters operating in space. The show received positive reviews during its run, and while she was initially only a recurring character, she was later promoted as a series regular, working alongside Aaron Ashmore, Luke Macfarlane and Hannah John-Kamen in the show.

Recent Projects

Concurrently Power was also cast in the Hallmark series “Good Witch”, reprising her role of Abigail Pershing from “The Good Witch’s Family”. The show has many of the movie series characters reprise their roles, as it follows the story of residents within the fictional town of Middleton. The show has been airing for six seasons, and Sarah has been a part of the show since its inception. While working on the show, she’s also had other projects, including the independent films “I Lived” and “The Hexecutioners”.

She also appeared in a few episodes of the show “Schitt’s Creek”.

The series is about a formerly wealthy family who are forced to move to Schitt’s Creek, a town they once purchased as a joke. The show has won numerous awards during its run, and has received acclaim from numerous fronts. She also had a recurring role in the show “American Gothic”, playing Jennifer Windham. The show aired on CBS, and told the story of an affluent family residing in Boston who discover upon their patriarch’s death that he was a serial killer. Tensions rise as the family begins to believe that he did not work alone as a killer. While the show had a good premise, it had a lot of development problems, and didn’t have enough ratings during the first season, leading to its cancellation.

Other shows she’s appeared in include “Rosewood” and “Designated Survivor”.

Personal Life

Sarah married actor Peter Mooney in 2017 after two years of being in a relationship. He is best known for his work in the television series “Rookie Blue” in which he played Officer Nick Collins and the show “Camelot” in which he portrayed Sir Kay. The two have a child together, and have been mostly at home due to various quarantine restrictions around the world brought about by the coronavirus. She’s been staying active online in the meantime, sharing her opinion on world events.
