She has a younger sister Mary, born in 2001. Her parents separated in 2013 and three years later completed their divorce, after being married since 1994. She hasn’t said which school she attended, but has stated her unhappiness when she moved to New Zealand to film “The Hobbits”, and had to leave normal schooling.

Peggy’s career started in 2008, when she portrayed Rachel in the drama film “Blessed”, starring her father James, alongside Natascha McElhone and Gary Lewis. After this, and still at school, she waited until 2012 for her next engagement, when the first installment of “The Hobbits” franchise was filmed, “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” (2012).

The following year she appeared in the sequel “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug”, and in 2014 in the third and final part “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies”. Since then she hasn’t been involved in any new project, and though she has been active on social media networks, she hasn’t revealed what she has been up to lately, other than having fun with her sister and friends.

According to sources, she is single – there is no information on her past or present relationships.

Peggy Nesbitt’s Father, James Nesbitt

Born William James Nesbitt on the 15th January 1965, in Ballymena, County Antrim Northern Ireland, United Kingdom; he is the son of James ‘Jim’ Nesbitt, the headmaster of the primary school he attended, and his wife May Nesbitt, who was a civil servant. The youngest of four and the only son, his three sisters Margaret, Kathryn, and Andrea are all now teachers. Growing up he spent so much time alone, playing with a ball, desiring to become a professional soccer player for Manchester United, or a teacher, following his father’s footsteps.

The family moved to Coleraine, County Londonderry, as his mother got a job with the Housing Executive. He attended Coleraine Academical Institution (CAI), and later studied acting at Central School of Speech and Drama (CSSD), moving to London, England at just 18 years old, and graduated from the university four years later.

Career Beginnings

James had made his acting debut at just 13 years of age; his parents decided to take him on an audition to Riverside Theater for its Christmas production of “Oliver!”, and after singing “Bohemian Rhapsody” at the audition, he was cast as the Artful Dodger.

For the next three years he worked with Riverside Theatre, and received the Equity card when he performed as Jiminy Cricket in “Pinocchio”; he was lucky to get the role, as the actor originally selected broke his ankle just two days before the performance. He continued with stage roles, playing Brad Majors in the play “The Rocky Horror Show” then appearing in “Godspell” as Jesus, both in 1983, while in 1987 he was Keith in the play “Up on the Roof”. Gradually he transferred to on-screen roles, but remained faithful to stage, working on such plays as “Hamlet”, “After Sun”, and “The Laws of War”.

On-Screen Success

James’s first notable role on screen was in 1991, as Fintan O’Donnell in the comedy-drama film “Hear My Song” starring Ned Beatty, Adrian Dunbar and Brian Flanagan. Four years later he secured his first starring role, as Tony in the romantic-drama film “Go Now”, next to Robert Carlyle and Juliet Aubrey. He was Uncle Joe the following year in the romantic drama film “Jude”, with Christopher Eccleston and Kate Winslet in the lead roles.

In 1997 he secured one of the most successful roles in his career, as Adam Williams in the TV series “Cold Feet”, and subsequently appeared in 60 episodes of the award-winning series, meantime in 1998 playing Pig Finn in the comedy film “Waking Ned Devine”, which was his first major success on film.

He continued successfully with the role of Ivan Cooper in the historical war-drama film “Bloody Sunday” (2002), about the Irish civil rights protest march and the massacre of Irishmen perpetrated by British troops. His popularity further increased when he was selected for the part of Dr. Tom Jackman, who is also known for his alter egos Mr. Hyde and Dr. Jekyll in the TV mini-series “Jekyll” in 2007. Two years later he starred with Liam Neeson in the thriller-drama film “Five Minutes of Heaven”, while in 2010 he joined Martin Sheen and Emilio Estevez in the comedy-drama film “The Way”, and from 2012 to 2014 played Bofur in “The Hobbit” franchise.

Recent Projects

In recent years, James has been focused on television roles; in 2016 he was Colin Howell in the TV mini-series “The Secret”, then he was Harry Clayton in the TV series “Lucky Man” from 2016 to 2018, and most recently played Tom Brannick in the TV mini-series “Bloodlands” (2020).

TV Host

Because of his specific accent and voice, he has been hired as a host of several TV shows; in 2008 he hosted the documentary show “Drama Trails” for 10 episodes, then hosted the “National Movie Awards” (2010), and “Northern Ireland’s Greatest Haunts”, while recently he was the narrator of “British Airways 24/7: Access All Areas” (2019).

Personal Life and Net Worth

James and Peggy’s mother met for the first time in 1989, and soon after began dating. However, in 1991 they broke up following the release of the film “Hear My Song”, but then in 1994 started dating once again, and married the same year. In 2013 James announced their split, and in 2016 they officially divorced. Since then, he hasn’t had any affairs, in public anyway.

He is dedicated to several charities, including Wave, which supports those who have been affected by the Troubles, the Ethno-nationalistic conflict in Northern Ireland. Furthermore, he is also the UNICEF UK ambassador, among other positions.
In the 2016 New Year Honours List, he was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his contribution to drama, and the community in Northern Ireland.
