Who is David Justice?

David Christopher Justice was born on 14 April 1966, in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, and is a former professional baseball player, best known for his career in Major League Baseball (MLB) in which he played mostly as an outfielder or a designated hitter. Some of the teams he played for during his career include the Atlanta Braves, Cleveland Indians, and the New York Yankees.

The Riches of David Justice

As of early-2020, David Justice’s net worth is estimated to be over $40 million, earned largely through a successful career in professional baseball. He played in the MLB for 13 years, and earned numerous lucrative contracts from the teams he played with.

He’s also done a bit of television work, which has contributed to his income.

Early Life, Education, and Career Beginnings

At a young age, David showed promise on numerous fronts, excelling in his academics while also showcasing his athletic abilities; due to his talent, he was able to skip two grades of primary school. He attended Covington Latin School in Kentucky, and became a member of the school’s basketball team, in which he broke the record for all-time leading scorer of the school.

His achievements in basketball led him to be offered a scholarship at Thomas More College in Kentucky, where he took up a course in Criminal Justice with a minor in Psychology.

After completing his degree, he didn’t pursue a career in professional basketball, but instead looked to professional baseball, a sport he was interested in since he was a child. He entered the MLB draft and was selected by the Atlanta Braves. After two years, he made his major league debut, replacing Dale Murphy who had been traded to the Philadelphia Phillies.

A Successful Baseball Career

During his debut season in 1990, Justice quickly became a star, and won the National League’s Rookie of the Year Award with 28 home runs. He continued making a name for himself the following year, as he helped his team rise to the top of the division, though his performance was hampered by a nagging back injury.

Despite that, he was able to help his team reach the World Series. After a year of sub-par performance due to his injury, he bounced back in 1993 and finished third in the Most Valuable Player (MVP) voting, behind Barry Bonds and Lenny Dykstra.

After the 1994 MLB strike, he returned to play the following year and helped the Braves get to the World Series once more. This time, he was in good condition but drew the ire of fans after making a comment against them for the lack of support they were giving. Despite that, he got a crucial home run in the sixth game of the series that helped them win the championship.

With a World Series under his belt, he was expected to perform even better the following year, but his season ended abruptly after he suffered a shoulder separation injury.

Later Baseball Career

In 1997, just before the season started, David was traded to the Cleveland Indians with Marquis Grissom. He continued to excel, and helped his new team get to the World Series. In the next few years, he continued with solid performances, though not as strong as during his time with the Braves. In 2000, he was traded to the New York Mets before getting sent to the Oakland Athletics. He was considered an experiment with the Athletics, who were trying out new strategies. Following his one year with the team, he opted to retire.

While he had a successful professional baseball career, he was also excelling on other fronts, and was even featured in “People” magazine in which named him one of the Most Beautiful People of the year. He was later inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Atlanta Braves, as he was a part of many championship competing lineups with them. In 2007, The Mitchell Report published an article reporting him for the possible use of performance-enhancing drugs, one that has denied in the past. Despite that, the report may have been the reason that he became ineligible for the MLB Hall of Fame as he only got one vote, eliminating him from any future discussions.

Life After MLB

After retiring from the sport, Justice was hired by the sports network ESPN, or Entertainment and Sports Programming Network, as a commentator for professional baseball sportscasts for two years. After his two year run there, he then moved to the YES Network, for which he mainly did coverage of the New York Yankees in a studio setting. The network is known for its close ties to the Yankees, due to being in the same ownership.

He also contributed articles to the network’s website, and hosted the program “Yankees on Deck”. He took a significantly lesser role there in 2007, and after his home was destroyed by the wildfires in California, he never returned to the network.

In 2011, he was portrayed by actor Stephen Bishop in the film “Moneyball”, which starred Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill. The film is based on the book “Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game” and talks about the Athletics and their manager Billy Beane who implemented a statistical method to recruiting talent, leading to a change in the world of professional baseball.

Personal Life

In 1992, David married actress Halle Berry after being in a relationship for a few years. She was once one of the highest-paid actresses in Hollywood, winning the Academy Award for best actress and appearing in numerous high profile films.

These include playing the role of Storm in the “X-Men” film franchise, and recently appearing in “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum”. The couple resided in Sandy Springs, Georgia, and stayed together for four years before separating. They divorced a year later, and Berry even filed for a restraining order against him.

A few years later, he met businesswoman Rebecca Villalobos, who was the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the company, Exotic Spices Calendars. The two married in 2001 and they have three children together. The family was featured in an episode of “Celebrity Wife Swap”, in which his wife developed an interest in acting.

At a young age, he began working in the mines, and during his free time he was trained by fighters from his town, learning the techniques of mixed martial arts.

However, while going through all of this, he discovered a strong desire to pursue a career as an actor. After matriculating from high school, he enrolled at Vancouver Film School, intent on paving his way as an actor.

From NFL Star to Convicted Killer: The Tragic Story of Rae Carruth

Published

on

Who is Rae Carruth?

Former American professional Football Player and convicted murderer Rae Theotis Carruth was born as Rae Lamar Wiggins in Sacramento, California USA on 20 January 1974, making Aquarius his zodiac sign. He spent three seasons playing for the Carolina Panthers of the National Football League (NFL), and was fired after he was charged and eventually found guilty of conspiring to kill his former girlfriend Cherica Adams, who was at the time pregnant with their son.

Education and early life

Rae and his sister Samel were raised in Sacramento solely by their mother Theodry Carruth, as she divorced their father Charles Wiggins when Rae was still a toddler; Theodry went on to marry her second husband Samuel Carruth, but they divorced when Rae was 14.

Struggling to cope with family issues, as he and his sister were once again raised solely by their mother who worked multiple jobs to financially support them, Rae found comfort in football. He studied at Valley High School and was on the school’s football team, while he was rated to be the best player there.

Rae was offered football scholarships by multiple colleges, and chose to enroll at the University of Colorado, Boulder in 1992.

College football

Rae began playing for the Colorado Boulder Buffaloes as soon as he enrolled at the university, and was during his final year there named to the first-team All-American; his teammates included future professional Football Players Kordell Stewart and Koy Detmer.

Rae graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in English language and literature in 1996, thus making himself eligible for the NFL draft.

Professional Football Player

Rae was picked by the Carolina Panthers in the first round of the 1997 NFL Draft, and signed a $3.7 million four-year contract with them, which included a signing bonus of $1.3 million.

He started 14 games and caught 48 passes during his rookie season, including four touchdown passes; he was named to the all-rookie team for the 1997 season.

Rae broke his right foot during the first game of the 1998 season, and then caught no passes for the remainder of the season.

He played only the first six games in 1999, catching 14 passes for 200 yards.

Love life and relationships

Rae was in a relationship with Michelle Wright while attending the University, and she gave birth to their son Rae Jr. in 1994. Following their break-up and Rae’s success in football, he was ordered to pay $5,400 as child support; Michelle later testified that she agreed to have Rae pay half of the money, but only if he were to become a better father.

In 1998 and 1999, Rae was in an on-and-off relationship with American real estate agent Cherica Adams, whom he then conspired to kill.

Crime, arrest and conviction

Cherica was shot four times with a Charter Arms revolver on 16 November 1999, in the vicinity of Rae’s house in Charlotte, North Carolina; she was able to call the police, revealing that Rae had stopped his car in front of hers, and that a person from a vehicle next to hers shot her. The police later identified her killer as American nightclub manager and Rae’s friend Van Brett Watkins Sr.

Cherica was taken to a hospital, where she fell into a coma; she was eight months pregnant with Rae’s son, and the doctors had to perform an emergency caesarean section. Rae was arrested and then released on $3 million bail, while he promised to turn himself in if either Cherica or his son died.

The baby, named Chancellor Lee Adams was without oxygen for more than an hour prior to being born, and this caused cerebral palsy and permanent brain damage; he was 21 when he graduated from Vance High School in 2021.

Cherica died on 14 December 1999, nearly a month after she had been admitted to the hospital, but Rae failed to turn himself in as he had promised, so was arrested by police a day later, after they found him hiding in the trunk of his car in front of a motel. The police also found a cell phone, candy bars, clothes, bottles of his urine and $4,000 in the car; following his arrest, the Carolina Panthers waived him and the NFL suspended him indefinitely.

During the trial, the prosecution claimed that Van Brett Watkins Sr. was hired by Rae to kill Cherica because she didn’t want to abort their son, while Rae’s lawyers claimed that Watkins was mad and searching for Rae because of a drug deal gone bad, and that he shot Cherica after asking her about Rae’s whereabouts, and after she ‘flipped him off’.

Rae was found guilty of using an instrument to destroy an unborn child, shooting into an occupied vehicle and conspiracy to commit murder, and was sentenced to spend between 19 and 24 years in jail; if he had been found guilty of first degree murder, he could’ve been executed. Watkins was sentenced to spend between 40 and 50 years behind bars for the murder of Cherica.

Rae had served 18 years when he was released from the Sampson Correctional Institution on 22 October 2018, and he’s since been living in Pennsylvania.

Interesting facts and hobbies

Rae was interested in playing various other sports during his teenage years, including basketball, baseball and tennis.

He was physically highly active during his time with the Carolina Panthers, as he attended all of the team’s training sessions, and also worked out at the gym nearly every day.

It’s believed that Rae was addicted to cocaine prior to being sent to prison, but this hasn’t been confirmed.

Cherica’s mother Saundra Adams often spoke badly about Rae in public, and he accused her of lying; Rae sent her a letter in 2018, apologizing for calling her a liar.

Height, eyes and wealth

Rae’s age is 49. He has brown eyes and black hair, is 5ft 11ins (1.8m) tall and weighs around 190lbs (85kgs).

Rae’s net worth’s been estimated at over $10,000, as of May 2023.
