Laura Rutledge is a person who has definitely made your head turn at least several times while watching sport coverages. How did this beautiful woman’s career start and what type of man can be the right one for this sports lover?

Early life and Education

Laura McKeeman was born 2 October 1988, in St. Petersburg, Florida USA to American parents of English-Scottish descent. She has always considered her mother, Deborah McKeeman, her best friend, even while growing up, but nothing is known about her father, and rumors say that she has a missing brother, but so far she hasn’t confirmed or denied the gossip. She has always expressed her love of sports, and her parents allowed her to go to sporting events from a very young age.

She spent her early years in Celebration, Florida, where she attended Celebration High School. During her schooling, she spent her spare time doing dancing activities. Her first plans were to finish a ballet school, but she went to Florida University instead, where she graduated with a degree in the field of broadcast journalism, while also working at the school’s radio station as a part of the sports broadcasting team. She won the 2011 Red Barber Award for Excellence in Broadcasting, which was awarded to her by the University.

Career

Laura started her professional career as a sports journalist as a sideline reporter for Fox Sports.

The story goes that a conflict escalated between one of the Fox reporters and the management, which led to the reporter being fired, making finding a replacement rather urgent. This moment was crucial for Laura Rutledge, who got the chance for her first appearance on the television screen. Her coverage was so well received that she was employed to permanently occupy the role.

One of her first tasks was covering Fox’s broadcasts of Tampa Bay Rays baseball games, and later on it expanded to her reporting on San Diego Padres games as well. She also did the on-field coverage of the NCPA’s National Paintball Championship in 2012 at Lakeland, Florida, for Fox College Sports.

In 2013 she hosted “Chargers Insider” for the San Diego Chargers, as well as “SD Live” – an original show at Fox Sports San Diego, for which she also served as the producer.

Working for ESPN

In the summer of 2014 Rutledge expanded her portfolio and joined ESPN and the SEC Network, both behind the desk and on the television screen. In the same year she hosted the Coors Light Post Game show that aired on Fox College Football, as well as half-time programming for FSN college football games. She worked as a reporter and commentator on a variety of sports, before becoming the host on “SEC Nation”, the SEC Network’s college football pre-game show.

She served as a mainstay in ESPN’s coverage of the College Football Play-off, as well as the NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Championships, and the Women’s College World Series and College’s World Series. The main sports that she covers are college football, basketball, baseball, softball and gymnastics.

In the fall of 2019 she became a permanent contributor to “Get Up”, the ESPN’s morning show, after Michelle Beadle’s departure, and she has also signed a multi-year contract extension, the second agreed on with ESPN, the first being signed in 2018. They decided to go with Rutledge after seeing her astonishing performance in similar positions for CNN’s “New Day” and “Early Start”, as well as HLN’s “Morning Express with Robin Meade”. She also is a regular at a “SportsCenter”.

She is still working for ESPN, featuring in a plethora of shows, including the “SEC Nation”.

Pageantry

As a student, Laura participated in the pageantry competition, and was first runner-up, which brought her a $1000 scholarship prize. On 7 July 2012 she won the title of Miss Florida, receiving her crown from Kristina Manolo, the former titleholder. She also competed in the 2013 Miss America pageant, but was eliminated in the Top 16 round, having lost to Mallory Hagan.

Marriage with Josh Rutledge

Laura married professional baseball player Josh Rutledge, on 7 December 2013, after five years of dating. While in his senior year of high school, her husband led his team to a state championship, which made it easy for him to make baseball his profession.

He played for the “Alabama Crimson Tide” until 2012, and then playing Major League Baseball for the “Colorado Rockies” before he was traded to the “Boston Red Sox” in 2015. The two met while on duty, during his great days in baseball – he was playing in the game, she was covering it, and the rest is history. The marriage seems to be a happy one, as Laura has on many occasions spoken openly about her husband’s support, both in the home and in her career. Josh retired from playing sports professionally in 2018, and is currently working as a free agent.

The couple has a daughter, Reese Katherine Rutledge born on Laura’s 31st birthday, on 2 October 2019. The family also owns a dog, Remi.

Accident on Court

On 19 November 2018, Laura was reporting the sidelines from Sanford Stadium, Athens, Georgia U.S., when she was caught in a collision between two football players and was knocked to the ground. One of the players that hit her was Prather Hudson who played for University of Georgia, who took it upon himself to write an apology on Twitter – with a twist!

‘Hey @LauraMRutledge really sorry I knocked you down, but… I can pick you up at 7,’ he wrote. Of course, Hudson was denied with a smiling emoji, and the tweet gained a lot of negative attention from Josh Rutledge’s ring, but the incident and its aftermath gained both of them extended media coverage, so we don’t think anyone is truly upset about Hudson’s stunt.
