Introduction

Not everyone’s path to success is easy and fast. Some people did get everything on a plate, but most had to do hard jobs and to spend lot of their time trying to become big names in their professional field. One of those who did his hardest to get to where he is now is Niall Matter. Who is Niall Matter and how did he become a fan-favourites?

Early Life

Niall Matter was born on 20 October 1980 in Edmonton, Alberta Canada, of Russian and Irish ancestry. Matter spent his childhood with his brother Trevor on a dairy farm owned by their parents, but his family has also made a living from rigging oil for multiple generations, so it was always expected of him to go down that same path.

Working as a Oil Rigger

When he was 13, his teacher recommended that he enroll into acting classes, and Matter ended up winning the Best Actor prize in 1999 in a local drama championship. However, even this wasn’t without hardshipsas when he was 17 he got himself into trouble, after which his parents grounded him and sent him to work rigging oil for his grandfather for three months. Matter himself stated that this experience helped him realize important things, which helped him focus on his classes more, and he passed all of his high school tests. He remained working at the oil rigs for eight more years together with his brother, while at the same time studying acting in Vancouver, Canada, at Vancouver Film School.

When Matter was 25 he had an accident while he was working – he was almost crushed inside the drilling rig cab that weighed over 17 tons! This accident had his quad muscle detach from his femur, while at the same time he was almost lost his right leg. His rehabilitation lasted for over six months, during which he had extensive physiotherapy and was in danger of having his leg amputated if he didn’t recover. Luckily, he regained his walking ability on his own, and quickly went back to work, but he was a witness of another accident in which his colleague lost both of his legs. Afraid that the same would eventually happen to him as well, he finally quit and moved to Vancouver, to pursue acting as his full-time job.

Eureka

Matter made his acting debut in 2007, when he got the role of Josh Riley, a baitshop owner, in the TV movie “Loch Ness Terror”, also known as “Beyond Loch Ness”, alongside Don S Davis and Brian Krause. During filming, he sent a tape with his audition to producers of the teen drama “The Best Years”, which ended with him being cast in the main role, cocaine addict and bar tender Trent Hamilton. After the first season ended, Matter left to film a guest role for two episodes of Syfy’s “Stargate Atlantis”, as US Air Force airman Lieutenant Kemp. At the same time, he auditioned for another Syfy series called “Eureka”.

He thought he was auditioning for a guest role for just one episode, and so took some artistic freedom during the casting, which ended up with him being given the recurring role of Zane Donovan, a bad but genius guy who appeared from the first episode, and developed a fling with Erica Cerra’s character, Sheriff Jo Lupo. In the fourth season the story shifted, and Matter’s character became a big part of the regular cast, and he remained a star until the show ended.

During all this time, Matter also had cameo roles in series such as “Warehouse 13”, appearing alongside his “Eureka” co-star Erica Cerra, as well as in “Fear Itself”, “90210” and the the long-running sitcom “Melrose Place”.

Later Acting Endeavors

During 2009, Matter had a small part in “Watchmen”, a film by Zack Snyder, playing Byron Lewis, otherwise known as Mothman.

He could also be seen in the short movie that went with the DVD release of the movie, entitled “Under the Hood”.

In 2012, he landed the lead role in the science fiction sitcom “Primeval: New World”, playing the part of Evan Cross, a multi-millionaire whose wife had been killed by an Albertosaurus. The series was a spin-off from the popular “Primeval”, but only lasted for one season due to its low ratings. However, this didn’t prevent Matter from winning a Constellation Award for Best Male Performance in Science Fiction category, and being nominated for another science fiction category award, this time for a Leo Award. He got a role in the TNT series “Guilt by Association”, however, after the pilot episode TNT decided that they wouldn’t continue filming.

Matter landed cameo roles in many Canadian and American series alike, some of them being in CTV’s “Motive”, NBC’s “Constantine”, and TNT’s “Rizzoli and Isles”. He made an appearance in the Calgary International Film Festival in 2014 in its closing film, “Ally Was Screaming”. For his portrayal of the film’s character, Andrew, he was nominated for an AMPIA Rosie Award, and during November 2014 he was called out as one of the Rising Stars during the Whistler Film Festival, where he and his castmates appeared during the showing of “Ally Was Screaming”.

In 2015 Matter became a part of the cast of “Remedy” during its second season, and in the next year acted in several series, including “Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce”, “Stop the Wedding” and “A Snow Capped Christmas”.

He also once again attended the Calgary International Film Festival, this time as part of the cast for “Chokeslam”, Canadian wrestling-comedy movie that won four AMPIA Rosie Awards in 2017. In the following years, Matter was part of the cast for over dozen television series and films, some of which include the fourth season of “When Calls the Heart”, and guest appearances in “iZombie”, “Supernatural”, “The Good Doctor”, “Frozen in Love”, “Love at First Dance” and “Country at Heart”.

Marriage and Children

Matter married Sara in December 2016, tying the knot in a private ceremony held in Hawaii, USA. The couple welcomed their first child that same year, and their second heir was born two years later, in 2018. Matter keeps details of his love life private, so nothing is known about their life in union, or about his wife’s background.

Personal Life

Matter is good friends with his “Eureka” castmates, Neil Grayston and Colin Ferguson, and still sees them on a regular basis. He used to date his colleague Serinda Swan, who was famous for her performance in “Graceland”. This relationship didn’t last for too long, but the two remained good friends.

He is an avid fan of the National Hockey League team the Edmonton Oilers. Matter said that one of his first jobs in Vancouver was ‘hanging out the side of skyscrapers changing windows and fixing the weather stripping’.

He isn’t active on Instagram or Facebook, but regularly posts on Twitter where he has over 24,000 followers.

Net Worth

Niall has appeared in over 50 TV series, and movies and has earned himself a little fortune. His net worth is estimated at around $4 million as of early 2020. As an example of income, while he was filming Eureka, his salary was $60,000 per episode.

Physical characteristics

Niall Matter is 6ft (1.83 meters) tall, but his other body measurements are not disclosed. He is considered to be a handsome man, with pale skin, dark hair and strikingly blue eyes. He is often seen with a week-old beard, but is apparently still loved by ladies world-wide.
