Early life and education
Tamara was raised alongside her five older siblings by their father, but who died of pancreatic cancer when Tamara was nine years old, and their mother who was a housewife, but who developed bone cancer. Her mother re-married to a drug addict who often beat her, and when Tamara tried to intervene he would beat her too.
Tamara’s mother died in 1985, and the six children were divided between their relatives who continued to raise them – Tamara lived with a cousin who mistreated her, and she suffered sexual abuse from several male relatives.
Tamara devoted herself to studying and matriculated from high school in 1989, then continued on to study accounting at Baruch College, but dropped out because she was dating a physically abusive boyfriend.
Career as a singer and model
Tamara was noticed by Cheryl ‘Coko’ Gamble, the lead singer of the band Sisters With Voices (SWV), and she attended their audition but was so shy that she asked to sing in the dark.
She could be heard in other people’s songs, then became popular initially as a background dancer in Big Daddy Kane’s music video “Ain’t No Half Steppin”.
She was both the MC and the singer of SWV, and rapped in their songs “I’m So Into You” and “Right Here”. Tamara has been credited with writing several SWV songs, such as “Right Here” which was featured in their first album “It’s About Time”. She became the band’s lead singer in 1996 when they also started gaining more recognition, and to this day the girls have sold over 20 million copies of their albums.
Whwn SWV disbanded in 1998, Tamara became a model working for the Ford Modelling Agency – her venture into the modelling industry was short-lived however, and she started writing the book “Souls of my Sisters: Black Women Break Their Silence, Tell Their Stories and Heal Their Spirits” which was published in 2000. She then returned to college, graduating from Belmont University in May 2004 with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. In 2007, her second book was published, entitled “Player hateHER: How to Avoid the Beat Down and Live in a Drama-Free World”. She also became a TV personality in the same year, appearing in the reality program “I Married a Baller”, which follows five weeks of Tamara and Eddie’s lives.
In 2009 she was invited to compete in the 18th season of the show “Survivor”, entitled “Survivor: Tocantins – the Brazilian Highlands”. Tamara didn’t know anything about the show, nor did she know how to swim or hunt, however, she learned and turned out to be one of the strongest competitors – the show was eventually won by J. T.
Love life and relationships
Tamara met Eddie George in 1994 at a shopping mall, but they didn’t start dating until 2000. They married in a private ceremony in 2004, attended by only their closest friends and family, and it was announced not long after that Tamara was pregnant with their son – the pregnancy was very hard on Tamara who had to stay in bed for over half the gestation period.
In 2005, their son Eriq Michael George was born, and in addition to him, Tamara is also the stepmother of Jaire David who is the son of Eddie and his previous girlfriend.
Rumors started circulating the internet about the two divorcing in April 2012, after their house in Nashville in Tennessee was about to be sold by their bank in default of payments, however, a deal was eventually made with the bank and the two got to keep their home.
Hobbies and other interests
Tamara is the supporter of the Black Lives Matter movement, and has joined several peaceful protests organized around the US.
She is now a philanthropist who has helped gather money for several charity causes, while she has also donated money to a local animal shelter in Brooklyn as she is a huge lover of animals.
Tasting various cuisines is one of her main hobbies and she combines this with her love for travelling – she has been to several US states but prefers to travel overseas to European countries such as France, Spain and Italy.
She is keen on watching movies in her spare time, and some of her favorite actors and actresses are Tom Hanks, late Robin Williams and Angelina Jolie, while some of the movies she likes to watch the most are “The Terminal”, “Good Morning Vietnam” and “Sleepless in Seattle”.
