Patrick Leonard Sajak was born in Chicago, Illinois USA, on 26 October 1946 – his zodiac sign is Scorpio and he holds American nationality. He is perhaps known best for having been the host of the American family game show “Wheel of Fortune”, which was created by Merv Griffin in 1975 and also starred Susan Stafford and Charlie O’Donnell – each episode shows three contestants trying to guess what letters there are in the shown word or a phrase, and the winner gets to go home with a money prize.
In 1983, Pat started hosting the eponymous re-make of the show, and for his performance he was nominated for 19 Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Game Show Host, and won three.
Pat was raised alongside his brothers David Sajak and William Backal in Chicago by their father Leonard Anthony Sajak who was a factory worker and their mother Joyce Helen who was a housewife – Leonard died when Pat was around seven years old, and Joyce went on to marry Walter Backal. Pat was also a disc jockey in the US Army – he was the host of the show “Dawn Buster” during the Vietnam War, and copied Adrian Cronauer by starting his shows with ‘Good Morning Vietnam’.
Pat gained recognition after he joined the radio station WEDC, becoming their newsman working from 12 p.m. to 6 a.m. – he was still attending college at the time, then upon graduation was drafted into the US Army and went to Vietnam. In the early ‘70s, Pat worked at the radio station WSM and in 1977 joined KNBC-TV network becoming their weatherman.
He launched his acting career in 1982, when cast to play a small role as a newscaster in the parody movie “Airplane II: The Sequel”, which starred Robert Hays, and the following year saw him play Kevin Hathaway in the soap opera “Days of Our Lives”.
From 1984 to 1989, he hosted the game show “Super Password”, and on 9 January 1989 began hosting a late night talk-show on CBS up until 13 April 1990. In 1993, Pat voiced a character in the animated children’s series “Rugrats”, while the following 10 years saw him host various shows including “Live with Regis and Kelly” (substitute host) and “Pat Sajak Weekend” – in 2002, he began hosting the radio sports talk-show “The Pat Sajak Baseball”, through to 2006.
He is also a puzzle game creator, with his most popular being “Lucky Letters” which began selling in 2007. In 2010, Pat started working for the conservative editorial magazine “National Review” as a writer, while he has also contributed to the website Ricochet.com.
On 8 May 2019, he broke a Guinness World Record for being a game show host for the longest period of time, counting 38 years and 198 days – his current contract says Pat will host “Wheel of Fortune” until 2022.
He is a huge fan of baseball, and in 2005 invested in the Golden Baseball League – Pat is also a fan of hockey and cheers for the Washington Capitals competing in the National Hockey League (NHL). He is a businessman too, and owns the radio station WNAV based in Annapolis, Maryland – for 22 years as of November 2020.
On 8 November 2019, Pat underwent surgery to remove an intestinal obstruction, and was away from work until 5 December 2019, while Vanna White hosted “Wheel of Fortune” during that time.
