Who is Christopher Velez?

Christopher Velez is an American-Ecuadorian musician and singer, who is best known to the world as a member of the Latin-American boy band CNCO, which was formed in 2015 following the finale of the first season of the singing competition show “La Banda”, created by Simon Cowell and produced by Ricky Martin. Since then, CNCO and Christopher himself have become stars.

He finished high school there, and returned to the USA when he was 18 years of age. He wanted a better life for himself and his parents, but started by doing several menial jobs, including shoe shining, just to survive. Nevertheless, he had a dream of becoming a musician from an early age, and wanted to enroll in college to study music, but once he saw an ad for La Banda, Christopher decided to sign up for the audition.

Career Beginnings

Alongside other band members, Christopher auditioned for the first season of La Banda, and reached the finals singing with several other musicians as a part of the band.

CNCO was created on the La Banda’s finale, and Velez was joined by Richard Camacho, Zabdiel De Jesus, Joel Pimentel De Leon and Erick Brian Colon to form the band. The name comes from the abbreviation of the Spanish’ word for Cinco, which means five. Following the end of La Banda, the band signed a recording contract with Sony Music Latin which would last for the next five years. Their first song “Tan Facil” came out on the 29th January 2016, and the single reached the No. 25 on the Billboard’s Latin Rhythm Airplay, while it topped the US iTunes Latino charts and also Latin Airplay Chart.

The following day, the band held their first concert at The Fillmore, Miami Beach. Since Ricky Martin was the producer of the La Banda, he took them under his wing and the band started touring with him during his US and South American shows. As a result, the band performed in Hollywood, Florida, San Juan, Puerto Rico, then Chile and Argentina.

Rise to Stardom

Christopher and the rest of the band continued to produce new music and the second single “Quisiera” came out on the 13th May, while the debut full-length studio album “Primera Cita” came out on the 26th August.

The album reached No. 39 on the US Billboard chart, while it topped the US Latin chart and Argentinian chart. It achieved gold status in Latin America, making the band extremely popular in Latin countries. Before the release of the second album, the band released several singles, including “Reggaeton Lento”, which reached No. 6 on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart. The group continued working on increasing their popularity with new songs, collaborating with other musicians, including Rio Roma, Becky G, and Ana Mena, among others.

The second studio album came out on the 6th April 2018, entitled “CNCO”, and it again topped the US Latin chart and the Argentinian chart, while the album reached No. 33 on the US Billboard Chart.

Furthermore, the album achieved platinum status and spawned such hits as Mamita, and “Hey DJ”, which is their most popular song. Since the release of the second album, they have also released their first EP “Que Quiénes Somos” on the 11th October 2019. Currently, the band and Christopher are preparing for their world tour, scheduled to start on the 30th May 2020 at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico, in San Juan.
